Effects of mooring line failure on the dynamic responses of a semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbine including gearbox dynamics analysis

Chenglin Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of a broken mooring line on the global and internal drivetrain responses of a floating offshore wind turbine. The results show that the broken line significantly affects platform motions, turbine structural loads, and tensions in the remaining lines, but has relatively small effects on the electrical power output and internal gearbox dynamics.

Platform and mooring system optimization of a 10 MW semisubmersible offshore wind turbine

Giulio Ferri et al.

Summary: In this paper, an optimization procedure is proposed to find the most effective platform and mooring system configurations for reducing the dynamic response of a semisubmersible 10 MW Floating Offshore Wind Turbine. The study develops an efficient frequency domain simulation model that considers viscous drag forces and contributions from the turbine and mooring lines. The optimized configurations show improved performance and smaller platform dimensions compared to scaling up the 5 MW geometry.

Design and comparative analysis of alternative mooring systems for floating wind turbines in shallow water with emphasis on ultimate limit state design

Kun Xu et al.

Summary: This paper examines mooring system design for floating wind turbines in shallow water, comparing seven mooring concepts for a 5 MW semi-submersible floating wind turbine at 50 m water depth. Six mooring design concepts are recommended for future assessment.

Numerical study of the Wavestar wave energy converter with multi-point-absorber around DeepCwind semisubmersible floating platform

Hamid Reza Ghafari et al.

Summary: This study numerically analyzed the Wavestar wave energy converter with multi-point-absorber around the DeepCwind semisubmersible floating platform. The results showed the effects of Wavestar mechanism on power extraction and movement of DeepCwind semisubmersible under different wave incident angles. Simulations were compared with experimental data, showing relatively good agreement in fairlead tensions.

Power production of the hybrid Wavestar point absorber mounted around the Hywind spar platform and its dynamic response

Hamid Reza Ghafari et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increasing wave periods lead to higher surge, heave, and pitch motions. However, in higher periods, the heave motion decreases as the Wavestar numbers increase, while the surge and pitch motions are not significantly affected. Due to Wavestar resonance, the maximum capture width ratio occurs in wave periods 5 and 6 s, resulting in higher Wavestar power and lower platform motion due to increasing radiation damping force.
