The role of metabolic syndrome in sudden cardiac death risk: Recent evidence and future directions

Amedeo Tirandi et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is a common condition with harmful effects on the cardiovascular system, particularly associated with sudden cardiac death. The disease is influenced by genetic predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle, and aging, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation and other cardiovascular problems.

Inflammation and cardiovascular diseases: lessons from seminal clinical trials

Luca Liberale et al.

Summary: Canakinumab Anti-inflammatory Thrombosis Outcome Study (CANTOS) and Colchicine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial (COLCOT) were the first two randomized clinical trials to demonstrate the effectiveness of specific anti-inflammatory treatments in cardiovascular prevention, confirming the involvement of specific inflammatory pathways in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Other trials targeting multiple inflammasome-independent pathways failed to show benefit, highlighting the significance of balancing the risk of impaired host defense and infections with the prevention of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with residual inflammatory risk.

Serum osteopontin predicts glycaemic profile improvement in metabolic syndrome: A pilot study

Lara Caserza et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prognostic impact of the inflammatory molecule osteopontin (OPN) in a cohort of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) patients receiving pharmacological treatments and Mediterranean diet. Results showed that Mediterranean diet improved glycaemic profile and higher baseline serum OPN levels predicted normalization of glycaemic profile.

Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio Predict Mortality in Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers Undergoing Amputations

Wenwen Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that elevated platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were associated with higher all-cause mortality in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) following amputations. Multivariate analysis identified age, Wagner classification, PLR, NLR, creatinine, and direct bilirubin as independent predictors of mortality after amputation.
