ATHENA has been designed to be a versatile detector for the Electron-Ion Collider, capable of meeting all scientific requirements. It features precise tracking and momentum resolution, high-performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, wide-range hadron identification, and nearly complete hermeticity. This article presents the detector design and its expected performance in the key physics channels.
ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. The detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels are reported.
