Influence of low-Z impurity on the stabilization of m/n=2/1 tearing/locked modes in EAST

Ming Xu et al.

Summary: The impact of low-Z impurity concentration on mode stabilization in the EAST tokamak has been investigated. It was found that low-Z impurity concentration can excite tearing modes with multiple helicities, particularly m/n = 2/1 magnetic islands that propagate in the electron diamagnetic drift direction. The increase in electromagnetic brake torque and the interaction with the tungsten protector limiter contribute to the mode locking and the formation of 3D asymmetric structures. Understanding the relationship between impurities and magnetic islands is crucial for optimizing control techniques.

Hybrid simulations of beta-induced Alfven eigenmode with reversed safety factor profile

Sizhe Duan et al.

Summary: Based on hybrid simulations, this study investigates the linear stability and nonlinear dynamics of beta-induced Alfven eigenmode (BAE) in the HL-2A tokamak. The results show that the drive of BAE is determined by the energetic ions beta, injection velocity, and orbit width parameter of energetic ions. Additionally, the size of q(min) affects the type of excited modes. Nonlinear simulation results reveal that the dynamics of BAE are sensitive to the energetic particle drive, leading to different behavior for strongly and weakly driven cases.

Theoretical studies of low-frequency Alfven modes in tokamak plasmas

Ruirui Ma et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the linear wave properties of low-frequency Alfven modes (LFAMs) observed in DIII-D tokamak experiments and finds that LFAM is a reactive-type kinetic ballooning mode instability under certain experimental conditions. The study also explains the observed spectral patterns and the dependence of instability drive on electron temperature in the experiments.

Gyrokinetic simulation of low-frequency Alfvenic modes in DIII-D tokamak

G. J. Choi et al.

Summary: Global gyrokinetic simulations have found a beta-induced Alfven eigenmode and a low-frequency mode co-existing in the DIII-D tokamak experiments. The low-frequency mode can be excited without fast ions, has a structure consistent with experimental observations, and is not the conventional Alfven-acoustic eigenmode as shown by an antenna scan. The simulated mode structures and parametric dependencies are in agreement with experimental findings.

Isotope dependence of beta-induced Alfven eigenmode (BAE) and low frequency mode (LFM) stability in DIII-D

W. W. Heidbrink et al.

Summary: The study found that beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (BAEs) generated with deuterium neutral beam injection (NBI) are at least as unstable in mixed hydrogen and deuterium plasmas as in pure deuterium plasmas, but stable when generated with hydrogen NBI. Additionally, low frequency modes (LFMs) are not affected by changes in beam species, indicating that LFMs are not driven by high-energy beam ions.

Investigation of annular/central collapse events triggered by the double tearing modes in EAST

Ming Xu et al.

Summary: The annular/central collapses of electron temperature in the EAST tokamak have been studied, with precursor modes being excited before these events. Multiple magnetic island chains coexist for high-Z impurity concentrations. Reproduction of annular/central collapse events is achieved through magnetic reconnection of m/n = 2/1 double tearing modes. Different penetration depths of high-Z impurity density play a key role in exciting these events, along with the establishment of reversed magnetic shear.
