Imaging of sugar-based contrast agents using their hydroxyl proton exchange properties

Linda Knutsson et al.

Summary: CEST MRI has the ability to detect non-metallic contrast agents, allowing the study of important biological molecules like proteins, sugars, and approved drugs. Sugar and sugar polymers can be used as exogenous contrast agents through the exchange of their hydroxyl protons with water protons. This technique has potential applications in assessing tissue physiology, studying blood-brain barrier integrity, characterizing cell uptake, and evaluating tissue drainage.

Towards robust glucose chemical exchange saturation transfer imaging in humans at 3 T: Arterial input function measurements and the effects of infusion time

Anina Seidemo et al.

Summary: Dynamic glucose-enhanced (DGE) magnetic resonance imaging has potential for tumor imaging using D-glucose as a contrast agent. The study investigated DGE arterial input functions (AIFs) in healthy volunteers at 3T and found that the measured DGE AIF signal change depends on both motion and blood glucose concentration change, emphasizing the need for sufficient motion correction in glucoCEST imaging. It was concluded that a longer infusion duration should preferably be used in glucoCEST experiments to minimize glucose infusion side effects without negatively affecting the DGE signal change.

Quantitative kinetic modelling and mapping of cerebral glucose transport and metabolism using glucoCESL MRI

Ben R. Dickie et al.

Summary: Chemical-exchange spin-lock (CESL) MRI is a useful technique for mapping glucose uptake and utilization in the brain. The study proposes two quantitative kinetic models to describe glucose-induced changes and applies them to tumor-bearing and healthy rats.
