Diurnal dynamics of nonphotochemical quenching in Arabidopsis npq mutants assessed by solar-induced fluorescence and reflectance measurements in the field

Kelvin Acebron et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between SIF, NPQ, and photosynthetic efficiency in Arabidopsis under field conditions. The results showed that the mutants npq1 and npq4 exhibited higher levels of SIF compared to wild-type plants, and changes in reflectance were related to the violaxanthin-antheraxanthin-zeaxanthin cycle.

A global barley panel revealing genomic signatures of breeding in modern Australian cultivars

Camilla Beate Hill et al.

Summary: The study assesses the contributions of historical and recent breeding efforts to local adaptation and crop improvement in a global barley panel. Modern Australian barley varieties exhibit higher genetic diversity compared to historical cultivars. Field-trialling and phenotyping suggest that genomic regions under strong breeding selection are associated with key agronomic traits.

Polyploidy: an evolutionary and ecological force in stressful times

Yves Van de Peer et al.

Summary: Polyploidy is hypothesized to play a role in both evolutionary dead-ends and diversification. Research suggests that whole-genome duplications may be linked with extinction events or global changes, while polyploids thrive in harsh environments. Biotic interactions, particularly with pathogens or mutualists, have differing effects on polyploids compared to nonpolyploids. Stress response is identified as a key factor in the establishment and success of polyploidy.
