The stem rust effector protein AvrSr50 escapes Sr50 recognition by a substitution in a single surface-exposed residue

Diana Ortiz et al.

Summary: Pathogen effectors play key roles during plant colonization and infection. Understanding how these effectors escape plant surveillance is important for plant breeding and resistance deployment. In this study, the researchers examined the genetic diversity of the AvrSr50 gene in stem rust and found that it can escape recognition by the wheat Sr50 resistance gene through different mechanisms. They also identified key polymorphic sites in natural stem rust populations that are important for evading Sr50 recognition. This study provides insights into effector evolution and monitoring of variants in rust populations.

High-resolution mapping of Rym14Hb, a wild relative resistance gene to barley yellow mosaic disease

Helene Pidon et al.

Summary: The study successfully mapped the Rym14(Hb) resistance locus to barley yellow mosaic disease in a 2Mbp interval and developed co-segregating markers for marker-assisted selection in barley breeding. The resistance mechanism may represent a case of non-host resistance, potentially enhancing the durability of resistance.

A novel robust and high-throughput method to measure cell death in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves by fluorescence imaging

Yuxuan Xi et al.

Summary: The study presented a reliable high-throughput method for assessing cell death responses in Nicotiana benthamiana leaf agro-infiltration assays. The method relies on measuring the reduction of leaf autofluorescence in the red spectrum upon cell death induction, providing quantitative data suitable for statistical analysis. Comparisons with visual scoring and standard methods demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the approach for characterizing NLR activities in N. benthamiana.

Farmers' perceptions, production constraints and variety preferences of rice in Tanzania

William Titus Suvi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that rice is the most important food and cash crop for farmers in Tanzania, followed by maize, cassava, sweetpotato, sugarcane, pigeonpea, cowpea, simsim, beans, cocoa, banana, groundnuts, and palm. Major constraints affecting rice production and productivity in the studied areas include diseases, insect pests, drought, lack of fertilizers, lack of improved cultivars, poor soil fertility, and bird damage. Farmers preferred rice varieties with high yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, high market value, early maturity, aroma, and local adaptation. A systematic rice breeding program focusing on yellow mottle virus resistance and incorporating farmers' preferred traits is needed to increase productivity and adoption of new cultivars by farmers in rice-growing areas of Tanzania.
