Open avenues for carotenoid biofortification of plant tissues

Luca Morelli et al.

Summary: Plant carotenoids have multiple functions and benefits, and their profile in crops can be improved through biotechnology. However, challenges such as regulatory constraints and off-target effects need to be addressed. There is also a need to explore ways to mitigate the negative impact of altered carotenoid contents on photosynthesis. Additionally, the stability and bioaccessibility of carotenoid-enriched products should be confirmed. Overcoming these challenges will lead to advancements in carotenoid biotechnology and biofortification.

Carotenoid fortification of zucchini fruits using a viral RNA vector

Fakhreddine Houhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach to enhance the carotenoid content of edible fruits without the use of transgenic technology. By modifying a viral RNA vector, the fruits of zucchini plants were enriched with health-promoting carotenoids. Although controversial due to the use of genetically modified viral RNA, this method demonstrates the possibility of metabolically fortifying edible fruits without introducing transgenes.

Chloroplast ROS and stress signaling

Mengping Li et al.

Summary: This review highlights the impact of chloroplast reactive oxygen species (ROS) on plant stress responses and the associated signaling pathways. Recent studies using conditional mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana or under different stress conditions have shed new light on the regulation of chloroplast ROS. The review also discusses the interconnected chloroplast-to-nucleus retrograde signaling pathways initiated by ROS and ROS-modified target molecules, as well as the future directions of chloroplast stress research.

Making extra room for carotenoids in plant cells: New opportunities for biofortification

Salvador Torres-Montilla et al.

Summary: Carotenoids in plants play crucial roles in photosynthesis and photoprotection, as well as providing colors to non-photosynthetic organs. A diet rich in carotenoids is linked to improved health and cognitive capacity in humans, and carotenoids are widely used as natural pigments in the agrofood and cosmetic industries. The focus on enhancing carotenoid storage in plant cells through biotechnological strategies has increased in recent years, offering new opportunities for carotenoid biofortification.

Several geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase isoforms supply metabolic substrates for carotenoid biosynthesis in tomato

M. Victoria Barja et al.

Summary: GGPPS family members in tomato's plastids interact with PSY isoforms, with SlG2 physically interacting with PSY proteins. CRISPR-Cas9 mutants showed that defects in SlG3 have a greater impact on carotenoid levels and derived phenotypes compared to defects in SlG2.

Tissue-type specific accumulation of the plastoglobular proteome, transcriptional networks, and plastoglobular functions

Elena J. S. Michel et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the functions of plastoglobule proteins and their coordinated accumulation across various Arabidopsis tissue types, as well as the identification of specific interactions and central hub proteins in plastoglobules. The evaluation of mRNA-based forced networks also suggests potential crosstalk between plastoglobules and plastid gene expression, highlighting the complex regulatory mechanisms involved in plastid dynamics.

Molecular changes of Arabidopsis thaliana plastoglobules facilitate thylakoid membrane remodeling under high light stress

Roberto Espinoza-Corral et al.

Summary: The study revealed specific recruitment of proteins related to leaf senescence and jasmonic acid biosynthesis in plastoglobules under light stress, and an increase in carotenoid abundance consistent with enhanced thylakoid disassembly. The results suggest that plastoglobule-localized ABC1 kinases hold endogenous kinase activity, facilitating stress adaptation within chloroplasts.

Light signals generated by vegetation shade facilitate acclimation to low light in shade-avoider plants

Luca Morelli et al.

Summary: Plants growing in search of light can be shaded by other plants, leading to a decrease in the R:FR ratio. Different Brassicaceae species respond differently to low R:FR and low PAR, with shade-tolerant plants showing good adaptation and shade-avoider species exhibiting strong elongation under low R:FR exposure. Exposure to low R:FR can improve photoacclimation in shade-avoider plants, triggering changes in gene expression and chloroplast structure.

The chloroplast-associated protein degradation pathway controls chromoplast development and fruit ripening in tomato

Qihua Ling et al.

Summary: The research shows that the CHLORAD proteolytic pathway regulates chromoplast development, affecting the ripening process of tomato fruits. The SP1 homologue accelerates fruit ripening by promoting chloroplast-to-chromoplast transition, with broader effects on fruit softening, gene expression, and metabolism changes. This study highlights the critical role of chromoplasts in fruit ripening and provides a theoretical basis for engineering crop improvements.
