Basilar Artery Occlusion Chinese Endovascular Trial: Protocol for a prospective randomized controlled study

Chuanhui Li et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy in stroke patients with acute basilar artery occlusion compared to best medical therapy. The study design is a prospective randomized controlled trial, with the primary outcome being the proportion of patients achieving mRS 0-3 at 90 days.

Etiology of Large Vessel Occlusion Posterior Circulation Stroke: Results of the MR CLEAN Registry

F. A. V. Anne Pirson et al.

Summary: Most common cause of posterior circulation large vessel occlusion stroke is LAA, followed by cardioembolism, dissection, and ESUS. Patients with cardioembolism and ESUS have a better prognosis for functional outcome after endovascular thrombectomy than patients with LAA.

Trial of Endovascular Treatment of Acute Basilar-Artery Occlusion

Chunrong G. Tao et al.

Summary: This multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial in China compared endovascular thrombectomy to best medical care for basilar-artery occlusion stroke. The results showed that endovascular thrombectomy within 12 hours led to better functional outcomes at 90 days but was associated with procedural complications and intracerebral hemorrhage.

Endovascular Therapy for Stroke Due to Basilar-Artery Occlusion

L. C. M. Langezaal et al.

Summary: In a randomized trial involving 300 patients with basilar-artery stroke, endovascular thrombectomy was not significantly different from medical therapy with respect to a favorable functional outcome (modified Rankin scale score of 0 to 3) at 90 days, but a clinically significant benefit could not be excluded.

Summary: Despite best medical therapy, basilar artery occlusion stroke still has poor outcome. Recent randomized trials showed equivocal benefit of endovascular therapy versus best medical management.
