Origins of music in credible signaling

Samuel A. Mehr et al.

Summary: The evolution of music may have been driven by the need for credible signaling in coalition interactions and infant care, rather than just being a byproduct of other evolved faculties or for social bonding. These adaptations provide a foundation for the cultural evolution of music in its actual domain.

Laryngeal vocalizations: Grunts as a gateway to language?

Lorraine McCune

Summary: The 'grunt' vocalization is believed to play a crucial role in the development and evolution of language, with human infants transitioning to referential language under the influence of various factors. Grunts are influenced not only by mental representation, vocal motor skills, and gestures, but also occur in the context of affective attachment and subjective development.

Gesture-speech physics in fluent speech and rhythmic upper limb movements

Wim Pouw et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that the coordination of hand gestures and speech in humans is culturally and cognitively acquired rather than biologically based. The physical coupling of arm movements to speech vocalization has been found to impact fluent speech, with higher impulse arm movements leading to heightened F0 and amplitude envelope in vocalization. Acoustic peaks arise during moments of peak impulse of the movement, particularly during deceleration phases. Higher deceleration rates of higher-mass arm movements result in higher peaks in acoustics.

Exploring the effects of restraining the use of gestures on narrative speech

Alice Cravotta et al.

Summary: Research has shown that restricting gestures does not significantly affect speakers' narrative speech performance in terms of speech length, fluency, and acoustic features. However, the extent to which individuals rely on gestures may impact this outcome. Further investigation is needed into the role of gestures in the prosodic level of speech production while considering individuals' communicative and cognitive inclinations.

The multimodality of infant's rhythmic movements as a modulator of the interaction with their caregivers

Ana Moreno-Nunez et al.

Summary: Children's rhythmic movements in the first year of life predict later communicative development, with adults significantly responding to these movements and following the child's focus of attention. This dynamic interaction may support communicative development by promoting joint attention frameworks.

Chest beats as an honest signal of body size in male mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei)

Edward Wright et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between body size and the chest beat of male mountain gorillas. Larger males were found to have significantly lower peak frequencies, but there was no consistent relationship between body size and the temporal characteristics of the chest beat. The results suggest that the gorilla chest beat is an honest signal of competitive ability.

Multilevel rhythms in multimodal communication

Wim Pouw et al.

Summary: Animal communication is mainly conducted through different modalities like sound and visual cues. The various fields studying multimodal communication are diverse and somewhat disconnected, highlighting the challenge of connecting processes at different levels. Multimodal communication involves unique contributions from neural, bodily, and social interaction levels to the complex rhythms in human and non-human animal communication.

Speakers exhibit a multimodal Lombard effect in noise

James Trujillo et al.

Summary: The study found that in face-to-face communication, noise leads to increased speech intensity, enhanced gesture kinematics, and mouth movements. Acoustic modulation only occurs when gestures are not present, while kinematic modulation happens regardless of co-occurring speech, indicating that the visual channel plays a key role in carrying the communicative burden.

Summary: The study showed that using grunting can significantly improve overhead throwing velocity in collegiate baseball pitchers, with age, height, weight, and handedness having no impact on this effect. Additional research is warranted to explore the effects in populations of varying skill levels.
