A virtual reality study on postretrieval extinction of smoking memory reconsolidation in smokers

Thomas Zandonai et al.

Summary: This study tested the effect of postretrieval extinction (PRE) on the reconsolidation of smoking memory using a virtual reality (VR) simulation, finding that VR PRE after smoking memory retrieval can inhibit reconsolidation, showing superiority over a standard extinction procedure.

Effects of cortisol administration on craving during in vivo exposure in patients with alcohol use disorder

Leila M. Soravia et al.

Summary: By orally administering cortisol to patients with AUD during repeated exposure to alcohol, the study found that cortisol had distinct effects on craving depending on AUD severity and test day. While it enhanced craving in patients with less severe AUD on the first test day, it reduced craving in patients with more severe AUD. This suggests that combining cortisol with in vivo exposure could potentially reduce the strength of alcohol-associated memories and promote extinction memory consolidation in severe AUD patients.

A Meta-Analysis of Cue Reactivity in Tobacco Cigarette Smokers

Jennifer M. Betts et al.

Summary: The study found that drug cues significantly elicited stronger craving than neutral cues, but the effect sizes of physiological variables were lower or non-significant. Moderator variables such as cue modality, cue personalization, cue reactivity environment, and the use of multiple assessments of cue reactivity were significantly associated with specific cue-induced craving effects.
