Jin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the topological characteristics of brain structural network in pediatric epilepsy patients with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and found that VNS causes changes in topological characteristics by regulating regional properties in some brain structures.

Impact of Cardiac-Based Vagus Nerve Stimulation Closed-Loop Stimulation on the Seizure Outcome of Patients With Generalized Epilepsy: A Prospective, Individual-Control Study

Arthur Cukiert et al.

Summary: The study showed that regular VNS (rVNS) was effective in reducing seizure frequency in patients with generalized epilepsy, but activation of the cardiac-based VNS (cbVNS) feature did not significantly add to rVNS efficacy. However, some patients showed some reduction in seizure frequency during cbVNS, which might prove useful at an individual level.

The efficacy and tolerability of auto-stimulation-VNS in children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome

Sherouk A. Abdelmoity et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy and tolerability of auto-stimulation VNS models in pediatric patients with LGS, showing that at 24 months post implantation, most patients experienced significant seizure reduction and improvements in quality of life measures. The most commonly reported adverse events were dysphonia, paresthesia, and shortness of breath, which were all tolerated and subsided within 24 months.

Developmental outcome after corpus callosotomy for infants and young children with drug-resistant epilepsy

Ryoko Honda et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the developmental and seizure outcomes after corpus callosotomy in early childhood, finding that 42.5% of patients showed improved development postoperatively. Factors such as low preoperative developmental quotient, developmental gain one month after surgery, and postoperative seizure-free state were related to the improvement in postoperative developmental quotient.

Closed-loop vagal nerve stimulation for intractable epilepsy: A single-center experience

Graham M. Winston et al.

Summary: The study suggests that closed-loop VNS devices are associated with greater reduction in seizure frequency and more favorable clinical outcomes compared to open-loop devices at 9 months, although not significant at 24 months. Further studies in other centers are needed to validate the findings.

Summary: Vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) implantation is an effective and safe treatment for children and adolescents with pharmacoresistant epilepsy who are not candidates for curative epilepsy surgery. The surgery duration is short, postoperative hospitalization length is brief, and clinical outcomes are positive.
