Hexagonal boron nitride as a low-loss dielectric for superconducting quantum circuits and qubits

Joel I-J Wang et al.

Summary: The dielectric loss of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) thin films in the microwave regime was studied by measuring the quality factor of parallel-plate capacitors (PPCs) made of NbSe2-hBN-NbSe2 heterostructures integrated into superconducting circuits. The research findings showed that hBN can be a promising dielectric material for building high-coherence quantum circuits with substantially reduced footprint and reduced qubit cross-talk. The integration of hBN and NbSe2 parallel-plate capacitors with aluminium Josephson junctions can realize transmon qubits with coherence times reaching 25 µs.

A gate-tunable graphene Josephson parametric amplifier

Guilliam Butseraen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a tunable parametric amplifier using a graphene Josephson junction, with the ability to tune its working frequency widely through gate voltage. The amplifier exhibits a gain exceeding 20 dB and noise performance close to the standard quantum limit. These findings expand the toolset for electrically tunable superconducting quantum circuits and offer opportunities for the development of quantum technologies such as quantum computing and quantum sensing, as well as for fundamental science.

Phase-dependent microwave response of a graphene Josephson junction

R. Haller et al.

Summary: Gate-tunable Josephson junctions embedded in a microwave environment are a promising platform for engineering and optimizing superconducting quantum circuits. In this study, the authors investigate a graphene-based Josephson junction enclosed in a SQUID loop, and extract important information about the phase-dependent junction admittance.

Josephson junction infrared single-photon detector

Evan D. Walsh et al.

Summary: Josephson junctions serve as high-sensitivity magnetometers and voltage amplifiers, and are crucial for high-performance cryogenic and superconducting quantum computers. Despite the potential degradation in device performance caused by quasiparticle generation, this phenomenon also offers opportunities for detecting electromagnetic radiation with sensitivity.Detection of single photons in near-infrared range has been demonstrated by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based Josephson junction, revealing the critical role of quasiparticles in the detection mechanism.

Microwave photoassisted dissipation and supercurrent of a phase-biased graphene-superconductor ring

Ziwei Dou et al.

Summary: Irradiating normal-superconducting junctions with microwave photons leads to significant effects, with dissipation being a more sensitive probe of microwave photons than the supercurrent. Enhancements in dissipation at phase zero under high frequency photons are attributed to Andreev level transitions, indicating the potential for improving superconducting photodetectors and investigating photoassisted physics in hybrid superconducting systems.
