Depressed 660-km discontinuity caused by akimotoite-bridgmanite transition

Artem Chanyshev et al.

Summary: The 660-kilometre seismic discontinuity is the boundary between the Earth's lower mantle and transition zone, and its position is lowered to 750 kilometres beneath subduction zones. By conducting in situ X-ray diffraction experiments, the boundaries of the post-spinel and akimotoite-bridgmanite transitions have been determined. The large depressions of the 660-kilometre discontinuity in cold subduction zones are interpreted as the result of the akimotoite-bridgmanite transition.

Al partitioning between phase D and bridgmanite at the uppermost lower mantle pressure

Chaowen Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Al is more abundant in Phase D compared to Brg, and the partition coefficient slightly decreases with increasing temperature. Phase D has a high thermal stability region at elevated pressures and temperatures, but can completely decompose under certain conditions.

Water Solubility in Fe-Bearing Wadsleyite at Mantle Transition Zone Temperatures

Hongzhan Fei et al.

Summary: The solubility of H2O in Fe-bearing wadsleyite decreases with increasing temperature. Fe-bearing wadsleyite can contain approximately 1.0 wt.% H2O at mantle transition zone temperature. Dehydration melting may occur at the 520-km discontinuity by upwelling flow near plumes.
