Magnetic Interactions Between Radical Pairs in Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the magnetic states of chiral graphene nanoribbons by substitution of hydrogen atoms with ketones, leading to the generation of unpaired pi radicals that can interact via exchange coupling. The interactions between these radical states were found to depend significantly on factors such as chirality and the presence of ketone functionalization, and the parameters for accurately describing these systems within the mean-field Hubbard model were determined. Overall, this research provides insights for theoretically modeling and designing GNR-based nanostructures with tunable magnetic properties.

Order from a Mess: The Growth of 5-Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons

Alejandro Berdonces-Layunta et al.

Summary: The development of on-surface chemistry under vacuum has significantly enhanced our ability to synthesize carbon nanomaterials with atomic precision, particularly graphene nanoribbons. A detailed study of the growth process of armchair GNRs starting from dibromoperylene reveals a unique reaction pathway that can guide the design of other precursor molecules. Precursor molecules couple through a concerted mechanism to form covalent bonds and undergo dehydrogenation simultaneously, leading to straight GNR growth despite the presence of irregular metal-organic intermediates.

Chemical Stability of (3,1)-Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons

Alejandro Berdonces-Layunta et al.

Summary: Nanostructured graphene has been widely studied in recent years due to its tunable electronic properties for various fields. However, exposure of (3,1)-chiral graphene nanoribbons to oxidizing environments significantly oxidizes the ribbons and disrupts their electronic properties. Experiments show that even under gentle conditions, the ribbons are oxidized, providing insights into the reaction sites and defects caused by oxygen.

Topological phase transition in chiral graphene nanoribbons: from edge bands to end states

Jingcheng Li et al.

Summary: By narrowing semi-metallic chiral graphene nanoribbons to nanometer widths, a transition from metallic to topological insulators is observed. The combination of scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and theory simulations allows tracking the evolution of topological properties and band gaps of chiral graphene nanoribbons depending on their width, length, and chirality.
