Flood damage assessment with Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data after Sardoba dam break with GLCM features and Random Forest method

Beste Tavus et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the flood damage mapping performances of two satellite Earth Observation sensors, Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, using the Random Forest supervised classification method and various feature types in the Sardoba Reservoir area. The results show that the fusion of S1 and S2 data exhibits high classification accuracy for flooded areas, particularly in separating inundated vegetation.

New insights into the 2020 Sardoba dam failure in Uzbekistan from Earth observation

Ruya Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reasons for the failure of the Sardoba Reservoir dam in Uzbekistan using Earth observation data. The analysis reveals the importance of considering both physical and human factors in dam failure prevention. The results suggest that InSAR deformation monitoring should be included in future safety programs to detect risks and prevent damages.

Interval Analysis of the Loss of Life Caused by Dam Failure

Wei Ge et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impacts of both hydrodynamic and social factors on the loss of life caused by dam failure. By utilizing interval theory, a method for calculating loss of life and determining the influences of various factors on loss of life was proposed. The method was validated by analyzing actual loss of life data from 21 flooded regions, demonstrating its effectiveness in assessing the severity of potential loss of life due to dam failure.
