Evaluating the Optical Response of Heavily Decorated Black Silicon Based on a Realistic 3D Modeling Methodology

Yuhang Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a realistic 3D modeling method for black silicon-based multistacked nanostructures and successfully connects it with the experimental optical response. Far-field calculations reproduce the experimental reflectance spectra, while near-field analysis identifies different types of hotspots and shows their sensitivity to field enhancement. The simulated near-field property is used to examine the measured surface-enhanced Raman scattering response.

Bottom-up field-directed self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles into ordered nano- and macrostructures

Calle Preger et al.

Summary: Directed self-assembly of charged magnetic aerosolized nanoparticles with tunable size and composition has been demonstrated using combined electric and magnetic fields, resulting in a variety of nanostructures. The magnetization of nanoparticles and the orientation of external magnetic fields play key roles in governing the self-assembly process. These results highlight the potential of aerosol deposition in a combined electric and magnetic field for tailored bottom-up fabrication of nanostructures.

Enhancing Single-Molecule Fluorescence Spectroscopy with Simple and Robust Hybrid Nanoapertures

Abhay Kotnala et al.

Summary: Plasmonic nanoapertures have various exciting applications, but traditional nanoapertures may result in weak light-matter interactions. A new hybrid nanoaperture design, AuNIs-e-NA, provides multiple electromagnetic hotspots and can achieve up to 4000-fold field enhancements, significantly improving fluorescence signals. With simple design, easy fabrication, and strong signal enhancements, AuNIs-e-NA is a robust platform for surface-enhanced optical sensing, imaging, and spectroscopy.
