Controlled growth and composition of multivariate metal-organic frameworks-199 via a reaction-diffusion process

Razan Issa et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors used the reaction-diffusion framework to successfully synthesize MOF-199 single crystals, and then utilized this method to synthesize multivariate metal-organic frameworks with enhanced properties. By integrating organic linkers with different functional groups into the crystal structure, defects were created, resulting in the synthesis of MTV-MOFs. The effects of the linkers on the morphology, thermal stability, and surface area of the synthesized MTV-MOFs were investigated, demonstrating improved adsorptive capabilities for methylene blue and rhodamine B in aqueous solution.

Breathing Metal-Organic Polyhedra Controlled by Light for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Liberation

Yao Jiang et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new type of breathing metal-organic polyhedra using azobenzene units, which can achieve reversible expansion and contraction under light irradiation, capturing or releasing CO2 molecules. This breathing behavior is further confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, providing a new avenue for constructing new materials with specific functionality mimicking biological processes.

Guest-Driven Light-Induced Spin Change in an Azobenzene Loaded Metal-Organic Framework

Kai-Ping Xie et al.

Summary: This study reports an unprecedented guest-driven light-induced spin change in a Hofmann-type metal-organic framework, where the reversible trans-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene guest results in remarkable magnetic changes in a wide temperature range of 10-180 K. This finding not only establishes a new switching mechanism for SCO complexes, but also paves the way for the development of a new generation of photo-responsive magnetic materials.

High-performance adsorptive desulfurization by ternary hybrid boron carbon nitride aerogel

Jing Luo et al.

Summary: Novel aerogel-like boron carbon nitride (BCN) materials with excellent desulfurization capacity were prepared through a hydrogel template and freeze-casting strategy. The BCN aerogels exhibited superior adsorption performance and selective adsorption characteristics for removing aromatic organosulfur compounds. This study also revealed heterogeneous adsorption mechanisms on BCN aerogels through pi-pi and Lewis acid-base interactions, indicating their potential for efficient sulfur removal in fuel refining processes.

Molecular Surgery at Microporous MOF for Mesopore Generation and Renovation

Mohamed K. Albolkany et al.

Summary: Hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs) exhibit advantageous synergism of micro- and mesopore structures, but face challenges in synthetic control at a molecular scale. This study presents a novel approach for reversible and controllable mesopore generation and renovation in microporous MOFs like HKUST-1, achieved through gas-phase etching to create uniform mesopores without altering crystal size or morphology. The generated mesopores can be further modified using MOF precursor solutions, demonstrating a powerful protocol for precisely tailoring and tuning the properties of MOF materials at a molecular scale.

Capture and Separation of SO2 Traces in Metal-Organic Frameworks via Pre-Synthetic Pore Environment Tailoring by Methyl Groups

Shanghua Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, a pre-synthetic pore environment design strategy was utilized to create stable methyl-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for enhanced low pressure SO2 adsorption and separation from CO2. The key role of increasing methyl group densities at the benzenedicarboxylate linker in optimizing pore size was demonstrated for the first time. Various methods, including gas sorption isotherms, theoretical calculations, simulations, and DFT calculations, were used to validate the SO2 separation potential of methyl-functionalized MOFs.

Hierarchical-pore UiO-66 modified with Ag+ for π-complexation adsorption desulfurization

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Adsorption desulfurization using metal-organic frameworks such as UiO-66 has shown promising results in the removal of thiophenic compounds from fuels. A novel hierarchical-pore UiO-66 with increased specific surface area and porosity was developed for enhanced adsorption of larger adsorbates. The Ag+-exchanged hierarchical-pore UiO-66 exhibited high adsorption capacity for thiophene and benzothiophene, as well as the ability to maintain adsorptive performance in the presence of toluene, with good regeneration potential.

Deep Desulfurization with Record SO2 Adsorption on the Metal-Organic Frameworks

Fuqiang Chen et al.

Summary: This study reported a family of MOFs with abundant hydrogen bond donors that showed high selectivity for capturing sulfur dioxide in flue gas desulfurization and natural gas purification, along with excellent cycling stability. Multiple hydrogen bonding interactions ensured a firm grasp of SO2 molecules within the framework, leading to high uptake and density. The MOFs exhibited ultrahigh adsorption uptake and selectivity, as well as robust cycling stability even after multiple cycles.

Fabrication of metal-organic framework-based nanofibrous separator via one-pot electrospinning strategy

Congcong Chen et al.

Summary: A facile one-pot electrospinning strategy was proposed for preparing Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)/polymer composite materials, which exhibited uniform MOF distribution and good mechanical properties. The composite membranes, used as separators in Li-metal batteries, demonstrated significantly improved cycling performance under harsh testing conditions. This improvement was attributed to enhanced wettability and a uniform lithium ion flux stabilized by the open metal sites of uniformly distributed MOF particles in the membrane.
