Stellar Mass-to-light Ratios: Composite Bulge plus Disk Models and the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation

James Schombert et al.

Summary: This study presents stellar population models to calculate the mass-to-light ratio based on the colors of galaxies. A new composite bulge+disk model is introduced, considering the varying contributions from bulges and disks based on their optical and near-IR colors. Plausible star formation histories and chemical enrichment scenarios are built using these colors, improving the accuracy of the results. The study finds that using actual colors to constrain the mass-to-light ratio provides the most accurate prescription, but a reasonable bulge+disk model with total color also yields relatively accurate results.

WISDOM Project - X. The morphology of the molecular ISM in galaxy centres and its dependence on galaxy structure

Timothy A. Davis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the morphology of the molecular interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies using high-resolution maps. It finds that early-type galaxies have smooth and regular molecular gas morphologies, while spiral galaxy bulges exhibit more asymmetric and clumpy morphologies at the same spatial scales. Various large-scale galaxy parameters, such as galaxy morphological type and stellar mass, are found to significantly influence the morphology of the ISM. Contrary to previous beliefs, the study suggests that gas self-gravity is not the dominant process shaping the morphology of the molecular gas in galaxy centers.

WISDOM project - VI. Exploring the relation between supermassive black hole mass and galaxy rotation with molecular gas

Mark D. Smith et al.

Summary: The study investigates the correlation between SMBH masses and CO line widths using resolved and unresolved methods, finding the tightest correlation with the resolved sample and a total scatter of 0.6 dex, mainly influenced by the intrinsic scatter of 0.5 dex. Additionally, a strong correlation is found between deprojected CO line widths and stellar velocity dispersions averaged within one effective radius.

ALMA resolves giant molecular clouds in a tidal dwarf galaxy

M. Querejeta et al.

Summary: Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are condensations of gas and stars formed during galaxy interactions. The ALMA observations of J1023+1952 in the interacting system Arp 94 showed a high fraction of extended molecular emission and GMC properties similar to the Milky Way. Star formation occurs predominantly in the south of the TDG, with more molecular clouds and higher molecular-to-atomic gas ratio in the quiescent north.

A cautionary tale in fitting galaxy rotation curves with Bayesian techniques: Does Newton's constant vary from galaxy to galaxy?

Pengfei Li et al.

Summary: The application of Bayesian techniques in astronomical data analysis faces challenges due to potential parameter degeneracies and uncertainties in error models. An analysis on rotation curves from the SPARC database shows that the inference of a variable G(N) is influenced by the combined effect of parameter degeneracies and uncertainties in error models.

A massive stellar bulge in a regularly rotating galaxy 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang

Federico Lelli et al.

Summary: Cosmological models predict that early Universe galaxies experience chaotic gas accretion and star formation, followed by gas ejection from feedback processes. However, submillimeter observations of a starburst galaxy at redshift z. 5, ALESS 073.1, suggest that massive bulges and regularly rotating disks may form more rapidly than expected in the early Universe.

WISDOM project - VIII. Multiscale feedback cycles in the brightest cluster galaxy NGC 0708

Eve North et al.

Summary: Observations of NGC 0708 reveal a turbulent, rotating disc of molecular gas in the core of the galaxy, as well as a high-velocity, blueshifted feature at a distance from the center. The submillimeter emission peaks at the nucleus but extends to an anomalous CO emission feature, with no corresponding elongation found in the 5 GHz observations, suggesting a possible low-mass in-falling filament or jet-driven molecular outflow. Future integral field spectrograph observations may help determine the true cause of this anomalous emission.

New constraints on the 12CO(2-1)/(1-0) line ratio across nearby disc galaxies

J. S. den Brok et al.

Summary: Translating molecular gas mass estimates between studies using CO(2-1) and CO(1-0) lines requires understanding the behavior of the R-21 ratio, which can vary radially in galaxies. The study measures an average R-21 of 0.64 and shows an enhancement of 10-20 near the galaxy center. Correlations suggest that R-21 increases with gas surface density and star formation rate.

WISDOM project - VII. Molecular gas measurement of the supermassive black hole mass in the elliptical galaxy NGC 7052

Mark D. Smith et al.

Summary: Using observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, researchers were able to determine the mass of the SMBH and the stellar mass-to-light ratio in the elliptical galaxy NGC 7052. The results showed that the SMBH mass was significantly larger than previously estimated using ionized gas kinematics, and a central molecular gas deficit was likely due to tidal disruption.

Summary: The analysis of the ALMA CO(2 1) emission line and 1.2mm continuum of Mrk 509 reveals the presence of a molecular gas reservoir within a disc, ongoing star formation in a starburst ring, and indications of a minor merger. This suggests that galaxy mergers can lead to gas destabilization, fueling both star formation and AGN activity.
