Common envelopes in massive stars: towards the role of radiation pressure and recombination energy in ejecting red supergiant envelopes

Mike Y. M. Lau et al.

Summary: Using 3D hydrodynamical simulations, we find that massive red supergiant stars have different characteristics compared to low-mass stars during common-envelope events due to the significant support from radiation pressure. This support leads to the ejection of more mass and a larger final separation. Including radiation energy and recombination energy reveals that a substantial portion of the envelope, if not the entire envelope, could be unbound. Furthermore, the final separation increases by almost 20% due to the additional ejected material.

Common Envelope Shaping of Planetary Nebulae. III. The Launching of Jets in Proto-Planetary Nebulae

Guillermo Garcia-Segura et al.

Summary: The study successfully simulates the launching of magnetic winds from two circumbinary disks formed after a common envelope event, describing the characteristics of the wide jets and narrow jets. These computed jets are used to provide inflow boundary conditions for simulations of proto-planetary nebulae, producing bipolar, elongated shapes with high kinetic energies. The computed wide X-wind produces proto-planetary nebulae with slower expansion velocities and different shapes.

Binary central stars of planetary nebulae identified with Kepler/K2

George H. Jacoby et al.

Summary: Researchers identified 34 likely binary central stars of planetary nebulae from Kepler/K2 data, with seven showing eclipses. The study focused on Campaign 11, discovering 30 candidate variable central stars in a Galactic bulge field. The periods of these variables range from 2.3 hours to 30 days, indicating that most are likely to be close binary star systems.
