Smart mucoadhesive buccal chitosan/HPMC scaffold for sore throat: In vitro, ex vivo and pharmacokinetic profiling in humans

Sana Hanif et al.

Summary: This study aimed to deliver tibezonium iodide (TBN) and lignocaine hydrochloride (LGN) as a mucoadhesive buccal delivery to relieve sore throat. By combining chitosan and hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), better mucoadhesive strength and sustained release were achieved. The results showed satisfactory drug release and residence time of the buccal scaffold in vitro and in volunteers.

Exorbitant Drug Loading of Metformin and Sitagliptin in Mucoadhesive Buccal Tablet: In Vitro and In Vivo Characterization in Healthy Volunteers

Rouheena Shakir et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a buccal delivery system with mucoadhesive properties for sustained release of metformin and sitagliptin in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The use of Carbopol 940, agarose, and polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 as mucoadhesive agents in tablet formulations resulted in favorable mucoadhesive properties. Formulation R4 showed complete drug release within 6 hours, with a mucoadhesive strength of 26.99 g and a mucoadhesive time of 8.1 h in ex vivo studies. The CP and PVP blend demonstrated stability for up to 6 months. Overall, the CP and PVP blend was found to be appropriate for achieving the desired release and mucoadhesive properties in buccal tablets.

Evaluating Novel Agarose-Based Buccal Gels Scaffold: Mucoadhesive and Pharmacokinetic Profiling in Healthy Volunteers

Muhammad Ali Syed et al.

Summary: This study developed a mucoadhesive gel scaffold based on agarose and carbopol for simultaneous release of benzocaine and tibezonium iodide. The results showed that the AG-CP scaffold provided better mucoadhesive properties compared to pure AG or CP, with excellent performance in terms of mucoadhesive time, drug release, and stability. The mucoadhesive study on healthy volunteers did not provoke any adverse reactions.

Development of Novel S-Protective Thiolated-Based Mucoadhesive Tablets for Repaglinide: Pharmacokinetic Study

Nabil A. Alhakamy et al.

Summary: Mucoadhesive polymers play an important role in oral drug delivery systems. A new mucoadhesive polysaccharide polymer was developed and used for the preparation of mucoadhesive tablets. The optimized synthesis of the polymer resulted in improved properties. The mucoadhesive tablets showed enhanced adhesion strength and prolonged drug release. Formulations based on S-protected thiomers improved the bioavailability of low-solubility drugs.

A Green Composite Based on Gelatin/Agarose/Zeolite as a Potential Scaffold for Tissue Engineering Applications

Mohamadreza Youssefi Azarfam et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the green nanocomposite exhibited proper cellular activity along with a controlled release rate, and the swelling ratio of the hydrogel composite was decreased by adding zeolite. This suggests the potential of a fully natural composite as a biomaterial for tissue engineering, opening new ways to design versatile hydrogels for the regeneration of damaged tissues.
