Optical Switches for Lipid Membranes: Computed Molecular Projection Area as a Switch Selection Criterion

Ivan Boldyrev

Summary: Structural criteria for efficient photoactivated switches in lipid membranes are deduced using simple geometry and physics considerations. Azobenzene and stilbene have the greatest impact on the bilayer structure. Planar-elongated molecules with isomerizable double bond and no additional substituents on the atoms of the double bond, while substituents on adjacent fragments prevent the formation of planar cis configuration, are found to be the best photoswitches for lipid membranes.

Photoswitching of model ion channels in lipid bilayers

Juergen Pfeffermann et al.

Summary: Membrane proteins can be regulated by alterations in material properties intrinsic to the hosting lipid bilayer, such as the reversible photoisomerization of bilayer-embedded diacylglycerols. This study found that photoisomerizing OptoDArG's acyl chains can increase the open probability of mechanosensitive model channels and alter the material properties of the lipid bilayer.
