Microbial community structures and antibiotic biodegradation characteristics during anaerobic digestion of chicken manure containing residual enrofloxacin

Tie Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of residual enrofloxacin (ENR) on the anaerobic digestion of chicken manure and the biodegradation rate of ENR. The results showed that the addition of ENR increased the total biogas production, but at high concentrations, it reduced the production rate and delayed the peak period. ENR had different effects on archaea and bacteria, promoting hydrolysis reactions but inhibiting acetoclastic methanogens. The half-life period of ENR in the anaerobic digestion system was 9.16-10.83 days, with a biodegradation rate exceeding 80%.

Auspicious water treatment approach. Oxidative degradation of fluconazole and voriconazole antibiotics by CrO3 in different acidic environments: Kinetics, mechanistic and thermodynamic modelling

Ahmed Fawzy et al.

Summary: The kinetics of oxidative degradation of two important triazole antibiotics, fluconazole (Flz) and voriconazole (Vcz), were investigated in sulfuric and perchloric acid environments using chromium (VI) oxide (Cr-VI). The degradation reactions were acid-catalyzed and exhibited first order kinetics with respect to [Cr-VI] and fractional-first orders with regard to [A] and [H+]. The rates of oxidative reactions were not significantly affected by the ionic strength and dielectric constants of the reaction media. No free radicals were detected during the degradation reactions. Heat and the addition of certain metal cations (Mg2+ & Ca2+) were found to enhance the degradation rates. The study proposed a plausible oxidative degradation mechanism consistent with the experimental results. The activation and thermodynamic parameters were calculated and discussed. This study presents a simple and promising procedure for the degradation of Flz and Vcz drugs and the transformation of highly toxic Cr(VI) oxide to a safe Cr-III compound, benefiting both the environment and human health.

Longitudinal Chemical Gradients and the Functional Responses of Nutrients, Organic Matter, and Other Parameters to the Land Use Pattern and Monsoon Intensity

Md Mamun et al.

Summary: River water quality degradation in the mainstream of Han River has been identified, with more serious pollution observed in the downstream zone due to agricultural and urban-dominated areas. The study also found an increase in non-biodegradable organic pollutants in the water body. Various indices were used to assess the water quality and empirical analysis showed the relationships between nutrients and organic matter with land coverage.

Antibiotic removal processes from water & wastewater for the protection of the aquatic environment-a review

M. Sagaseta de Ilurdoz et al.

Summary: The paper highlights the seriousness of antibiotic contamination and emphasizes the need for research on effective methods to remove antibiotics from water. It provides an overview of antibiotic concentrations in different types of water and explores various methods for elimination. The paper also compares the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and presents the removal percentages achieved in representative studies. Biological methods and membrane technology show the best elimination efficiency, while chemical methods and constructed wetlands perform poorly in removing antibiotics.
