Tribolium castaneum: A Model Insect for Fundamental and Applied Research

James F. Campbell et al.

Summary: Tribolium castaneum has a long history as a model species in various subject areas. Research on its genetics, genomics, behavior, ecology, and pest management has provided valuable insights. Its genome sequencing, combined with available genomic tools, has facilitated functional genomics research. Understanding of its sensory systems, response to pheromones, movement patterns, and landscape utilization has improved. The use of Tribolium castaneum as a model in pest management, including the evaluation of insecticide resistance mechanisms, has also been significant. However, there is still potential for further integration among these fields.

Neuropeptide Bursicon Influences Reproductive Physiology in Tribolium Castaneum

Jingjing Li et al.

Summary: Bursicon plays a crucial role in the reproductive physiology of beetles, and its knockdown leads to abnormal oocytes and reproductive impairment. Bursicon may influence Vg expression by regulating the expression of JH and IIS/TOR pathway genes, thereby modulating reproduction in T. castaneum.

20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling regulates amnioserosa morphogenesis during Drosophila dorsal closure: EcR modulates gene expression in a complex with the AP-1 subunit, Jun

Byoungjoo Yoo et al.

Summary: Steroid hormones play important roles in various biological processes in animals, with 20-hydroxyecdysone acting as a central hormone regulator in insects for molting and metamorphosis. In Drosophila, 20E signaling modulates gene transcription during late embryonic development and acts in parallel to the JNK cascade. This novel mode of action for 20E signaling may provide insights into steroid hormone receptor interactions with AP-1 in mammals.
