Structural Dynamics and Thermal Transport in Bismuth Chalcogenide Alloys

Jiayi Cen et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed investigation into the structural dynamics, energetic and dynamical stability, and thermal transport of bismuth chalcogenides Bi2S3, Bi2Se3, and Bi2Te3 and their alloys. It reveals the competition between different phases, the impact of chemical bonding inhomogeneities and chalcogen disorder on thermal conductivity, and provides new insights into the thermoelectric performance of these materials.

Impact of noble-gas filler atoms on the lattice thermal conductivity of CoSb3 skutterudites: first-principles modelling

Jianqin Tang et al.

Summary: A systematic first-principles modelling study on CoSb3 skutterudites filled with noble-gas atoms showed that the fillers reduce thermal conductivity by suppressing group velocities of optic modes, with heavy fillers weakly interacting with the framework leading to larger suppression of thermal transport. Determining approximate rattling frequencies from harmonic force constants may aid in selecting filler atoms to optimize thermal transport in similar compounds.

Half-Heusler thermoelectric materials

Kaiyang Xia et al.

Summary: Half-Heusler compounds with 18 valence electrons are considered promising high-temperature thermoelectric materials, while nominal 19-electron compounds have gained popularity due to their unexpected high performance. The focus is now on the discovery and challenges of cation-deficient 19-electron half-Heusler compounds with vacancy-related short-range order, offering insights into defect-tailored thermoelectric properties.
