Expressional and functional comparisons of five clustered odorant binding proteins in the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys

Zehua Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expression and functional characterization of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in Halyomorpha halys, an invasive pest. The results showed that the OBP gene cluster was enriched in nymph and adult antennae, suggesting their involvement in the chemosensory process. Different expression levels of the five OBPs in nymph and adult antennae indicated independent regulation of this gene cluster. Ligand-binding experiments demonstrated similar specificities of these five OBPs towards various organic compounds. Particularly, an alarm pheromone analog showed high affinity and activity towards the OBPs. Therefore, this OBP cluster may play a role in the response of stink bugs to alarm pheromones and host-related volatiles.

Chemical compositions of essential oil from the aerial parts of male and female plants of Baccharis tridentata Vahl. (Asteraceae)

Manuel Minteguiaga et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the essential oil composition of male and female Baccharis tridentata Vahl plants and found high qualitative similarities but quantitative differences in certain components. Both sexes showed similar ratios of enantiomers in monoterpene hydrocarbons, contrary to related plants in existing literature. Natural bornyl acetate from B. tridentata essential oil demonstrated 100% enantiomeric excess of the levogyre enantiomer, with chemotaxonomic relevance.

Two classic OBPs modulate the responses of female Holotrichia oblita to three major ester host plant volatiles

H. -S. Wei et al.

Summary: Insects have a sophisticated olfactory system in their antennae to detect essential odorants. The study cloned OBP6 and OBP7 in scarab beetles, showing their importance in perceiving specific odorant compounds. Silencing of these genes significantly decreased female beetle responses to the compounds, indicating their essential role in olfactory perception.
