Palm fatty acid distillate esterification using synthesized heterogeneous sulfonated carbon catalyst from plastic waste: Characterization, catalytic efficacy and stability, and fuel properties

Balkis Hazmi et al.

Summary: The accumulation of plastic waste poses a serious threat to the environment, and finding solutions is crucial. This study successfully transformed waste polyethylene terephthalate containers into plastic waste char and then converted it into an acidic solid catalyst for biodiesel production. The findings provide a promising solution to the environmental issue of plastic waste.

Preparation and Characterization of Alkaline and Acidic Heterogeneous Carbon-Based Catalysts and Their Application in Vegetable Oil Transesterification to Obtain Biodiesel

L. L. Diaz-Munoz et al.

Summary: This study reports the preparation, evaluation, and comparison of alkaline and acidic heterogeneous carbon-based catalysts in the transesterification of safflower oil with methanol to obtain biodiesel. The catalyst prepared with potassium hydroxide and calcium nitrate showed the highest FAME formation and outperformed other catalysts even after four regeneration-reaction cycles. The best properties of an alkaline catalyst could be associated with its specific surface area and contents of potassium and calcium moieties.

One-pot conversion of highly acidic waste cooking oil into biodiesel over a novel bio-based bi-functional catalyst

Marwa M. Naeem et al.

Summary: A KOH/corncobs-derived activated carbon (AC) heterogeneous catalyst was developed for single stage biodiesel production from highly acidic waste vegetable oil, showing activity in both esterification and transesterification reactions. Optimal conditions of sulfuric acid to raw corn cobs ratio, activation temperature, reaction time, catalyst loading, and temperature were identified to achieve a high yield of 97.8% meeting ASTM standards. The catalyst exhibited stability for up to five successive uses in esterification but easily leached KOH and became inactive in transesterification.

Minghe Cao et al.

Summary: The solid acid catalyst prepared by sulfonated Sargassum horneri carbon efficiently catalyzes the esterification reaction of oleic acid and methanol for biodiesel preparation. By optimizing the conditions, the conversion rate of oleic acid can reach 96.4%, and the catalyst can still maintain a high conversion rate after four cycles of use.

A cleaner route of biodiesel production from waste frying oil using novel potassium tin oxide catalyst: A smart liquid-waste management

Tania Roy et al.

Summary: The valorization of waste frying oil to biodiesel through solid base catalyzed transesterification reaction was successful using a novel potassium tin oxide (KSO) 800 catalyst. The reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and showed improved efficacy at higher reaction temperatures, with no leaching of K-species observed in reusability tests. The KSO 800 catalyzed transesterification process effectively produced high quality biodiesel from waste oil in a cleaner and greener manner, making it a potential green catalyst for biofuel production.
