The interplay of intra- and intermolecular errors in modeling conformational polymorphs

Gregory J. O. Beran et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conformational polymorphs of organic molecular crystals using various theoretical models, analyzing the impact of dispersion errors in density functionals on monomer conformational energies, intermolecular interactions, and crystal structures. The results provide insights into crystal structure prediction for flexible compounds and establish benchmark datasets for testing quantum chemistry models in complex systems.

Density-Corrected DFT Explained: Questions and Answers

Suhwan Song et al.

Summary: HF-DFT is a common method for evaluating approximate density functionals, while DC-DFT is a theoretical framework for identifying failures of density functional approximations. Research on HF-DFT has found that in certain cases, using HF densities instead of self-consistent densities can provide more accurate and consistent energy results. A recent study reanalyzed HF-DFT and showed that DC(HF)-DFT substantially improves DFT results when SC densities are flawed.

Spin-component-scaled and dispersion-corrected second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory: a path toward chemical accuracy

Chandler Greenwell et al.

Summary: A spin-component-scaled, dispersion-corrected MP2 model (SCS-MP2D) is proposed to address the limitations of MP2 in describing dispersion interactions and reaction thermochemistry. Experimental results show that SCS-MP2D considerably improves the accuracy of MP2 and is comparable in accuracy and computational cost to state-of-the-art density functionals.

Detection and Correction of Delocalization Errors for Electron and Hole Polarons Using Density-Corrected DFT

Bhaskar Rana et al.

Summary: It has been found that using semilocal functionals for geometry optimization in computational materials science can lead to structural distortions and fail to obtain localized defects, but density-corrected DFT can detect this delocalization error, providing assurance for the accuracy of the results.

Density Sensitivity of Empirical Functionals

Suhwan Song et al.

Summary: Fitting parameters in approximate density functionals often leads to errors from self-consistent densities and energy functionals being conflated. However, using density-corrected DFT can separate these errors. In some cases, using Hartree-Fock densities instead of self-consistent densities can provide more accurate results at no additional cost.

What Types of Chemical Problems Benefit from Density-Corrected DFT? A Probe Using an Extensive and Chemically Diverse Test Suite

Golokesh Santra et al.

Summary: The performance of HF-DFT relative to self-consistent DFT under different XC functionals has been studied. HF-DFT is highly beneficial for subsets dominated by dynamical correlation, particularly at low HF exchange percentages. However, in subsets with significant nondynamical correlation, HF-DFT may do more harm than good.

Explaining and Fixing DFT Failures for Torsional Barriers

Seungsoo Nam et al.

Summary: The majority of torsional barriers can be accurately predicted by standard semilocal functionals, but some outliers, particularly in the Y=C-X group, exhibit larger errors due to delocalization errors caused by hyperconjugation. Using HF densities can improve the accuracy of calculations for these problematic cases, with HF-DFT showing better performance for long-chain conjugated molecules compared to exchange-enhanced functionals. HF-PBE0 is suggested to have the best overall performance in this study.

Elevating density functional theory to chemical accuracy for water simulations through a density-corrected many-body formalism

Saswata Dasgupta et al.

Summary: Existing density functionals do not accurately describe water properties across the entire phase diagram. The authors introduce a data-driven many-body potential energy function, MB-SCAN(DC), which reproduces the energetics of gas-phase water clusters and predicts properties of liquid water accurately. This new approach demonstrates the first DFT-based model that correctly describes water properties from gas to liquid phase.

Effect of halogen substitution on energies and dynamics of reversible photomechanical crystals based on 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid

Thomas J. Gately et al.

Summary: 9-Anthracene carboxylic acid derivatives form a family of thermally reversible photomechanical molecular crystals, with steric interactions playing a dominant role in photodimer formation and an energetic threshold of 80-90 kJ per mole for the dimerization reaction. Fluorinated 9ACs exhibit absent intermolecular bonding, explaining observed trends in dissociation kinetics and mechanical reset times. Photodimer dissociation kinetics depend on the initial photodimer amount, leading to a complex relationship between halogen atom substitution and dissociation rates.

Crystal structure prediction of energetic materials and a twisted arene with Genarris and GAtor

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful prediction of experimentally determined structures for energetic materials using a CSP workflow with Genarris and GAtor. The evolutionary niching feature of GAtor aids in finding experimental structures, while a putative structure with reduced sensitivity for DATB is found. The robust performance of Genarris and GAtor for diverse targets with varied intermolecular interactions is highlighted as part of the potential for including CSP in the energetic materials development process.

Theoretical investigation of polymorph- and coformer-dependent photoluminescence in molecular crystals

Xibo Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that polymorph- and coformer-dependent photoluminescence is influenced by polymorphism and cocrystallization. The theoretical modeling provided satisfactory prediction for the color zoning of ROY polymorphs and accurate qualitative and quantitative accuracy for the emission energies of 9-ACA cocrystals. The polymorph-dependent photoluminescence in ROY is controlled by intramolecular geometry, while accurate prediction of coformer-dependent PL in 9-ACA cocrystals requires modeling of the periodic crystal environment driven by charge transfer.
