Male Rat Offspring Are More Impacted by Maternal Obesity Induced by Cafeteria Diet than Females-Additive Effect of Postweaning Diet

Aynaz Tajaddini et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity increases the risk of health complications in offspring, and the effects can be exacerbated by offspring exposure to unhealthy diets. This study found that offspring from obese mothers who were fed an unhealthy "cafeteria" diet had smaller size, more abdominal fat, and altered gene expression in the liver. Additionally, maternal obesity enhanced the negative effects of postweaning unhealthy diet on male offspring, while having minimal impact on female offspring. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the sex-specific detrimental effects of maternal obesity on offspring.

Maternal high-fat diet programs white and brown adipose tissue lipidome and transcriptome in offspring in a sex- and tissue-dependent manner in mice

Christina Savva et al.

Summary: The study shows that maternal high-fat diet modulates the metabolic profile in offspring in a sex-dependent manner. Maternal high-fat diet alters the triglyceride profile in SAT and BAT of female offspring, increasing thermogenesis and cell differentiation in BAT, potentially preventing metabolic complications in the future. In contrast, male offspring born from high-fat mothers exhibit whitening of BAT and hyperplasia in VAT, along with impaired metabolic profile.

The influence of maternal unhealthy diet on maturation of offspring gut microbiota in rat

Kyoko Hasebe et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of maternal diet quality on the longitudinal maturation of gut microbiota in offspring. The results show that introducing solid food at weaning triggers the maturation of gut microbiota in rats, and a western-style, high-choice cafeteria diet has a significant impact on offspring gut microbiota. However, this impact is modulated by maternal diet history.

Mechanisms Underlying the Cognitive and Behavioural Effects of Maternal Obesity

Kyoko Hasebe et al.

Summary: The consumption of 'western'-style diets and sedentary lifestyles have led to a global epidemic of obesity, with maternal obesity, overnutrition, and unhealthy dietary patterns having lasting adverse effects on offspring's physical and mental health. Studies suggest that maternal overnutrition may disrupt offspring cognitive function, affective state, and psychosocial behavior through mechanisms such as neuroinflammation, disrupted neuronal circuities, dysregulated brain hormones, and changes in gut microbiota. Further research is needed to explore the specific pathways shaping abnormal behavior in offspring in the context of maternal obesogenic diet exposure.

High-fiber diet mitigates maternal obesity-induced cognitive and social dysfunction in the offspring via gut-brain axis

Xiaoning Liu et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity has been found to be associated with lower cognition and sociality in children. The study demonstrated a causal relationship between microbiota and behavioral changes, and showed that microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids can alleviate behavioral deficits in offspring of obese dams. High dietary fiber intake may be a promising intervention for maternal obesity-induced cognitive and social dysfunctions.

Regulation of hippocampal synaptic function by the metabolic hormone leptin: Implications for health and disease

Andrew Irving et al.

Summary: Recent advances have shown that leptin has multiple functions in the brain, beyond its role in hypothalamic control of energy balance. Leptin affects synaptic efficacy in the hippocampus, enhancing cognitive performance in memory tasks. Aging leads to reduced hippocampal responsiveness to leptin, potentially impacting cognitive function negatively.

Diet, obesity, and the gut microbiome as determinants modulating metabolic outcomes in a non-human primate model

Tiffany M. Newman et al.

Summary: The study indicates that diet plays a major role in gut bacterial diversity, but changes in the abundance of specific bacterial taxa should be considered in conjunction with both diet and obesity. Interestingly, the presence of P. copri appears to be linked to metabolic dysfunction in Western diet-fed NHPs.
