Genetic divergence and range expansion in a western North Pacific coral

James E. Fifer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the population genomic patterns of Acropora hyacinthus, a reef-building coral, along a latitudinal cline in Japan. The study identifies three cryptic lineages of A. hyacinthus and reveals the reduced genetic diversity, asymmetric migration, and genetic adaptation associated with range expansion. The findings provide insights into the genomic consequences of coral range expansion and the adaptive potential for further expansion.

Eighteen Coral Genomes Reveal the Evolutionary Origin of Acropora Strategies to Accommodate Environmental Changes

Chuya Shinzato et al.

Summary: By sequencing and comparing the genomes of Acropora species and other related taxa, this study identified genetic features that contribute to the evolutionary success and adaptation of corals, including gene duplications, positive selection of antimicrobial peptides, and symbiosis-related genes. These findings provide insights into the unique adaptations of Acropora to ancient warm marine environments, shedding light on its ability to adjust to rising seawater temperatures in the future.

Whole-Genome Sequencing Highlights Conservative Genomic Strategies of a Stress-Tolerant, Long-Lived Scleractinian Coral, Porites australiensis Vaughan, 1918

Chuya Shinzato et al.

Summary: The study found that corals of the genus Porites have unique genetic characteristics that give rise to their stress tolerance and longevity. Specifically, 30% of the skeletal matrix proteins in Porites were found to be unique to this coral species and not present in other corals. Comparative genomic analyses revealed that genes widely conserved among other organisms are selectively expanded in Porites, potentially contributing to their thermal tolerances and unique biological characteristics.

Environmental specialization and cryptic genetic divergence in two massive coral species from the Florida Keys Reef Tract

John P. Rippe et al.

Summary: The study revealed that two common coral species in the Florida Keys are each composed of four genetically distinct lineages, with two lineages specialized for deep habitats. Furthermore, corals migrating across reef zones are more likely to die before reaching adulthood.

Genetic Structure of the Goniopora lobata and G. djiboutiensis Species Complex Is Better Explained by Oceanography Than by Morphological Characteristics

Nina Yasuda et al.

Summary: This study utilized traditional morphological descriptions and newly developed microsatellite markers to examine the differences between morphological and genetic structures within G. lobata and G. djiboutiensis species complex. The results showed no genetic differences between typical G. lobata and G. djiboutiensis morphologies, but revealed a genetic break between subtropical and temperate regions. This study emphasizes the importance of using a multi-locus population genetic approach with a geographical context to confirm species boundaries of closely related species.

Whole-Genome Sequencing Highlights Conservative Genomic Strategies of a Stress-Tolerant, Long-Lived Scleractinian Coral, Porites australiensis Vaughan, 1918

Chuya Shinzato et al.

Summary: Massive corals of the genus Porites, known for their stress tolerance and longevity, have unique genetic bases that contribute to their ability to respond differently to environmental stressors like increased water temperature. Through genome sequencing and proteome analysis, it was found that some skeletal matrix protein genes in Porites are unique to this genus, which may explain their thermal tolerance compared to other coral species.
