A single QTL with large effect is associated with female functional virginity in an asexual parasitoid wasp

Wen-Juan Ma et al.

Summary: During the transition from sexual to asexual reproduction, female functional virginity, a trait where asexual females resist mating or fertilizing eggs, appears to evolve early in the transition. The genetic basis of this trait appears to be controlled by a single recessive locus. QTL mapping and candidate gene analyses revealed a single QTL of large effect, comprising at least 131 protein-coding genes, in the related sexual species. This suggests that rapid evolution of female functional virginity in the transition to asexuality may be governed by a single locus or cluster of closely linked loci.

Genomic population structure of sympatric sexual and asexual populations in a parasitic wasp, Meteorus pulchricornis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), inferred from six hundred single-nucleotide polymorphism loci

Nakatada Wachi et al.

Summary: Despite the two-fold reproductive advantage, asexual reproduction is not common in nature, possibly due to genetic deterioration or reduced genetic variation. A study on the genetic diversity and population structure of sympatric sexual and asexual populations of a parasitic wasp found distinct genetic structures in the apomictic asexual populations, with most showing considerable genetic differentiation from the sexual population. Fewer multilocus genotypes were identified in the asexual populations compared to the sexual population, suggesting their apomictic nature.

Species-specific but not phylosymbiotic gut microbiomes of New Guinean passerine birds are shaped by diet and flight-associated gut modifications

Kasun H. Bodawatta et al.

Summary: The gut microbiomes of birds lack phylosymbiosis and show high variability, with species-specific compositions shaped mainly by host diet rather than sampling locality. Flight-related gut modifications, combined with individual dietary differences, influence gut microbiome structure and contribute to the absence of phylosymbiosis. These findings suggest that symbiotic stability may be more dependent on microbial functional diversity than taxonomic composition, and indicate potential disparities in the coevolution between bird hosts and microbial symbionts.

Coadaptation between host genome and microbiome under long-term xenobiotic-induced selection

Guan-Hong Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers exposed parasitoid wasps to the herbicide atrazine for multiple generations and found that atrazine exposure led to adaptive changes in the microbiome and host genome, as well as alterations in gene expression and immune response. Microbiome transplant experiments showed that the evolved microbiome of the atrazine-exposed population decreased survival rates of adult wasps from the control population, indicating xenobiotic-induced selection mediated host-microbiome coadaptation, leading to a new host genome-microbiome equilibrium.
