Characterization of an Insoluble and Soluble Form of Melanin Produced by Streptomyces cavourensis SV 21, a Sea Cucumber Associated Bacterium

Joko Tri Wibowo et al.

Summary: Melanin, a dark-colored pigment, is widely distributed in various living organisms. However, its biotechnological applications are limited due to its unknown chemical structure and insolubility. In this study, two distinct forms of melanin were discovered and a novel purification protocol was proposed for their in-depth comparison.

Isolation of Actinomycetes with Cellulolytic and Antimicrobial Activities from Soils Collected from an Urban Green Space in the Philippines

Jann Eldy L. Daquioag et al.

Summary: Actinomycetes were isolated from soil samples collected at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus, with 114 isolates showing cellulolytic activity and 18 isolates exhibiting antimicrobial activity. The study identified rich sources of soil microorganisms with cellulolytic and antimicrobial activities in green spaces, particularly Bacillus sp. and Streptomyces sp. isolates with high cellulolytic and antimicrobial activities.
