Crystal Chemistry and Electronic Properties of the Al-Rich Compounds, Al2Cu, ω-Al7Cu2Fe and θ-Al13Fe4 with Cu Solution

Changming Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, the Cu solution behavior in the Al-Cu-Fe system was investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). It was found that Cu prefers to dissolve in Al-7 at ambient conditions, forming a ternary theta-Al76Cu2Fe24 alloy. At high temperatures, Cu can dissolve in both Al-7 and Al-9, forming theta-Al76Cu2Fe24. The stability and properties of the Al-rich compounds were also studied. The importance of applying the Hubbard U correction to the standard DFT functionals for Cu-containing metallic materials was demonstrated. This study helps characterize intermetallic compounds in Cu-containing Al alloys and control Fe-containing intermetallic compounds in the solidification of Al-based alloys.

Thermal stability of aluminum-cerium binary alloys containing the Al-Al11Ce3 eutectic

Frank Czerwinski

Summary: The strength retention of Al-Ce binary alloys at high temperatures was assessed compared to A380 alloy and pure Al. The Al11Ce3 eutectic and proeutectic phases were found to have limited effectiveness in strengthening Al-Ce alloys at room temperature and retaining their strength at increased temperatures. Despite the high hardness retention ratio of Al-Ce alloys, the yield stress decreased with testing temperatures.

Combining Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Cooling-Heating Curve Thermal Analysis to Study the Melting and Solidification Behavior of Al-Ce Binary Alloys

Marta Aniolek et al.

Summary: This study utilized DSC and CCTA thermal analysis techniques to evaluate the solidification and melting behavior of Al-Ce binary alloys, revealing significant differences in reaction temperatures under different alloy compositions that may exceed the typical measurement errors for each technique. Additionally, differences were observed in detecting certain reactions and non-equilibrium effects between DSC and CCTA.

High Strength Al-La, Al-Ce, and Al-Ni Eutectic Aluminum Alloys Obtained by High-Pressure Torsion

Stanislav O. Rogachev et al.

Summary: A comparative analysis was conducted on the microstructure and tensile properties of binary eutectic aluminum alloys Al-10% La, Al-9% Ce, and Al-7% Ni under high-pressure torsion (HPT). The refinement of eutectic particles in aluminum alloys through HPT resulted in a significant increase in strength while maintaining high plasticity. This study has established the relationship between the type of eutectic particles, structure formation process, and mechanical properties of the aluminum alloys.

Solid solution strengthening mechanism in high pressure die casting Al-Ce-Mg alloys

Bo Hu et al.

Summary: The introduction of cerium promoted nucleation of alpha-Al grains and Al11Ce3 phase served as the heterogeneous nucleation substrate of alpha-Al due to small lattice mismatch. The lattice constant of alpha-Al increased with increasing Mg content, enhancing yield strength and hardness due to solid solution strengthening effect. Mg atom solid solution improved work hardening capacity by increasing work hardening exponent and reducing stacking fault energy, promoting dislocation tangles and networks in the alpha-Al matrix.

Microstructure and properties of additively manufactured Al-Ce-Mg alloys

K. Sisco et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing of aluminum alloys is often dominated by near-eutectic Al-Si compositions, but there is a demand for new alloys with improved high temperature properties. This study focused on laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of two alloys in the Al-Ce-Mg system, utilizing a custom laser scan pattern to reduce porosity formation. Variations in solidification structure morphology were observed and explained using thermodynamic and thermal modeling.

Cerium Effect on the Phase Composition and Crystallization Behavior of Aluminum Casting Alloys Based on the Al-Mg-Si System

V. B. Deev et al.

Summary: By studying the phase composition and crystallization behavior of Al-Mg-Si-Ce alloys, it has been found that the addition of Ce can influence the phase formation and crystallization process of Al-Mg-Si-Ce alloys, positively affecting the inhibition of Mg2Si phase growth and compensating for the deterioration of casting properties.

Improving creep resistance of Al-12 wt.% Ce alloy by microalloying with Sc

Meng Yi et al.

Summary: The introduction of 0.4 wt.% Sc into the near-eutectic Al-12 wt.% Ce alloy has shown bidirectional influence with Ce, leading to reduced Sc microsegregation and increased lattice misfit strain. These effects improve the creep resistance of the alloy by promoting spatial uniformity of Al3Sc precipitates and inhibiting matrix dislocation climb.

A search for the eutectic system of high-temperature cast aluminium alloys

Frank Czerwinski

Summary: The research indicates that the novel cast aluminium eutectic systems of Al-Al3Ni and Al-Al11Ce3 do not show significant advantages over the traditional Al-Si base at high temperatures up to 500 degrees C. While there are differences in diffusivities of silicon, nickel, and cerium in aluminium, as well as eutectic melting temperatures and coarsening resistance of Al3Ni and Al11Ce3 phases, the observed similarities in temperature-related strengthening-reduction across all three eutectics highlight the need for further development criteria for heat-resistant aluminium alloys.
