β Grain refinement by yttrium addition in Ti-6Al-4V Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing

J. R. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Adding low levels of yttrium (Y) can reduce the width of solidified columnar beta grains in large titanium parts and induce a columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) in the latter stages of melt pool solidification, leading to reduced texture and increased solidification velocity.

Microstructure transition gradients in titanium dissimilar alloy (Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr/Ti-6Al-4V) tailored wire-arc additively manufactured components

J. R. Kennedy et al.

Summary: The nature of chemical mixing and microstructure gradients across interface transitions in manufacturing tailored components with two high-performance dissimilar titanium alloys using the wire-arc additive manufacturing process has been explored. The study found that a relatively long-range chemical gradient occurs during the transition between layers produced with the two different titanium alloys, leading to a stepwise exponential decay composition profile. The alloy-alloy composition gradients had little effect on the grain structure but strongly influenced the transformation microstructure.

Effect of deposition strategies on fatigue crack growth behaviour of wire plus arc additive manufactured titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V

Summary: The influence of three different deposition strategies on the fatigue crack growth behavior of WAAM Ti-6Al-4V was studied. The oscillation build exhibited the lowest crack growth rates and behaved more similarly to an annealed microstructure compared to the other two deposition strategies.

Tailoring equiaxed β-grain structures in Ti-6Al-4V coaxial electron beam wire additive manufacturing

A. E. Davis et al.

Summary: The study focused on characterizing the more refined primary beta-grain solidification structures and textures in components built with the novel coaxial electron beam wire DED AM (CEWAM) process. It was found that the CEWAM process changes the melt conditions to promote beta-grain nucleation ahead of the solidification front, resulting in a highly refined, equiaxed beta-grain structure. However, a mixed grain structure was commonly observed in thicker sections, requiring refinement during beta-annealing to achieve an equivalent microstructure to that seen in a standard beta-forged component.

Summary: In-situ cooling experiments were conducted on Ti64 samples for the first time, revealing the development of alpha colonies. Primary alpha laths play a crucial role in influencing subsequent colony growth and transformation process by nucleating secondary alpha laths through sympathetic autocatalysis.
