The effects of dilatancy in composite assemblies as micropolar continua

Farui Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of dilatancy on composite materials with rigid particles connected by rough elastic interfaces. By using a homogenization procedure to derive constitutive parameters, it demonstrates the validity of the micropolar theory in modeling the behavior of materials with micro-structures.

Dilatancy behaviour and permeability evolution of sandstone subjected to initial confining pressures and unloading rates

Honggang Zhao et al.

Summary: The behavior of sandstone under different initial confining pressures and unloading rates was studied in triaxial experiments. It was found that sandstones exhibited shear dilatancy before failure, with crack density increasing as initial confining pressure increased. The normalized permeability was positively correlated with unloading rates, with a linear/nonlinear relationship between the permeability and volumetric strain depending on the unloading rates.

Scale effect of shear mechanical properties of non-penetrating horizontal rock-like joints

Yifan Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the scale effect of shear mechanical properties of non-penetrating horizontal rock-like joints through numerical calculations and physical experiments. It found that the persistence ratio of the joint significantly affects the scale effect of joint shear strength, with different patterns for different types of joints.

Analysis of Flexural Toppling Failure in Rock Slopes Using Discrete Element Method

Yun Zheng et al.

Summary: This study utilized the UDEC numerical method to analyze the mechanism of flexural toppling failure and introduced new parameters to further understand the process. The results revealed that the failure zone of rock slopes includes a first-order instability part and an independent toppling zone, with surface deformation discontinuities being a precursor to flexural toppling failure.

Prediction Model of Dilatancy Stress Based on Brittle Rock: A Case Study of Sandstone

K. W. Cao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dilatancy stress and mechanical properties of sandstone under different elastic modulus and porosity conditions. A prediction model was established using regression equations and artificial neural networks. Results showed relationships between rock crack initiation stress, dilatancy stress, elastic modulus, and porosity, as well as different failure modes observed at varying porosity levels. The ANN-MLP model provided accurate predictions with low error values, contributing to the understanding of rock mechanics and engineering applications.
