Third harmonic shear horizontal waves for material degradation monitoring

Fuzhen Wen et al.

Summary: This article investigates early detection of incipient damage in structures through material degradation monitoring, using third harmonic shear horizontal waves and second harmonic Lamb waves to compare sensitivity to microstructural changes following dedicated thermal treatment on the same plate. The study demonstrates that third harmonic shear horizontal waves exhibit higher sensitivity to microstructural changes than commonly used second harmonic Lamb waves, and effectively characterize thermal aging-induced microstructural changes in metallic plates.
