Insight into the negative Poisson's ratio effect of the gradient auxetic reentrant honeycombs

Yujie Shao et al.

Summary: The compressive properties and energy dissipation characteristics of positive gradient auxetic honeycomb (PGAH) and negative gradient auxetic honeycomb (NGAH) were investigated, with NGAH showing superior energy dissipation. This suggests that NGAH is an ideal energy-absorbing structure.

Compression and hysteresis responses of multilayer gradient composite lattice sandwich panels

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: In order to improve the combat effectiveness, stealth, and safety of marine structures, multilayer gradient composite lattice sandwich panels (MGCLSPs) were designed and fabricated. The incorporation of bionic gradients and material mixtures improved the damping and vibration isolation behaviors of the panels. Experimental and numerical studies showed that polyurethane foam-filled MGCLSPs exhibited better energy absorption characteristics, with positive gradient panels absorbing the most energy. The addition of polyurethane foam enhanced the strength and energy absorption characteristics of the panels.

Dynamic mechanical behaviour and energy absorption of aluminium honeycomb sandwich panels under repeated impact loads

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Sandwich structures, particularly aluminium honeycomb sandwich panels (AHSPs), are widely used in marine lightweight design and impact protection due to their excellent mechanical properties. This paper investigates the dynamic mechanical behavior and energy absorption characteristics of AHSPs under repeated impact loadings through numerical modeling and experimental validation, revealing the deformation modes and performance of sandwich structures.

Investigation on the shear behaviors of carbon fiber composite sandwich panels with the X-core

Jie Mei et al.

Summary: The in-plane shear response of an all-composite X-core sandwich panel was investigated through experimental, numerical, and analytical methods in this study. The findings revealed the dominant failure mode of delamination on the joint and web, and the numerical models accurately simulated the initiation and extension of delamination, showing good agreement with experimental results. The theoretical model based on Reddy zig-zag laminated beams theory and spring model for the joint successfully forecasted the shear mechanical properties, with analytical results showing significant effects of member shear deformation and joint stiffness on the shear modulus and reasonable agreement with experiments.

Bandgap properties in metamaterial sandwich plate with periodically embedded plate-type resonators

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: A novel plate-type resonator and its bandgap properties in a metamaterial sandwich plate were studied in this research. The results showed the existence of locally resonant and Bragg bandgaps in the proposed structure. The effects of geometric parameters and surface mass ratio on the bandgaps were investigated, along with the improvements of the resonator structure to enhance performance.

A novel gradient negative stiffness honeycomb for recoverable energy absorption

Shuai Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel GNS honeycomb structure and investigates its energy absorption performance through experiments and simulations, revealing the influence of structural parameters on energy absorption. The study shows that the novel GNS honeycomb has better repeatability, vibration control, and cushion performance compared to the NNS honeycomb, thus verifying its potential in the field of energy absorption.
