Applications of Nonlinearity in Passive Vibration Control: A Review

P. S. Balaji et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of nonlinearity in passive vibration control devices, showing how nonlinearity is applied and beneficial in the systems. Nonlinearity has also been successfully applied in energy harvesting devices, nonlinear energy sinks, and metamaterials for vibration isolation and energy harvesting purposes. The implementation of nonlinearity in engineering systems has shown significant benefits over linear systems.

Analysis of the nodal beam isolation system based on application of helical spring

Krzysztof Michalczyk et al.

Summary: The nodal beam isolation system limits vibration transmission from the source to an isolated element by utilizing nodal points on an elastic beam. The use of a helical spring as the elastic beam reduces system dimensions and expands applications. The computational model presented in the paper allows for determination of nodal point positions and analysis of system parameter influences on vibration amplitudes and stiffness.

Bandgap and vibration transfer characteristics of scissor-like periodic metamaterials

Yingli Li et al.

Summary: A novel periodic mass-spring-truss chain based on a scissor-like structure and inertial amplification is proposed for low-frequency vibration attenuation, exploring resonance, anti-resonance, and bandgap formation, with an optimal configuration suggested. Different angles and stiffness ratios have an impact on the bandgaps.

A dual-functional metamaterial for integrated vibration isolation and energy harvesting

Ze-Qi Lu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a dual-functional metamaterial for integrated low-frequency vibration isolation and energy harvesting, achieved by implanting a rolling-ball with coils into a spherical magnetic cavity. Numerical results demonstrate that a cavity mass arrayed beam with a periodic array of nonlinear energy harvesters has more and wider low-frequency band-gaps compared to traditional metamaterials.
