Consensus Development Project (CDP): An overview of staffing for safe and effective nursing care

Jane E. Ball et al.

Summary: Nurse staffing levels in acute hospitals play a crucial role in providing safe and effective care, but the lack of specificity in research findings on the required number of nurses hinders practical application. This has led to ongoing challenges in achieving safe staffing levels and addressing the shortage of registered nurses.

Investigations into the impact of nursing unit layout on critical care nurses

Bushra Obeidat et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of three different nursing unit spatial layouts on critical care nurses' satisfaction and walking behavior. The results show that there are variations in nurses' satisfaction with the placement of the nursing station, arrangement of patient rooms, availability of family space, and unit's auditory privacy. Additionally, the pedometer readings and movement maps reveal differences in nurses' walking patterns across the three units.

Chronic hospital nurse understaffing meets COVID-19: an observational study

Karen B. Lasater et al.

Summary: Research found that nurse staffing varies across hospitals in New York and Illinois, with the worst mean staffing in New York City. Over half of nurses in both states experienced high burnout. Adjusted data showed that each additional patient per nurse increased the likelihood of nurses and patients giving unfavorable reports.

Is Hospital Nurse Staffing Legislation in the Public's Interest? An Observational Study in New York State

Karen B. Lasater et al.

Summary: The Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act in New York state assembly aims to ensure hospitals have enough nurses for patient care. Research on 116 acute care hospitals in NY found that higher patient-to-nurse ratios were associated with increased in-hospital mortality, longer lengths of stay, and higher 30-day readmission rates. If hospitals were staffed at the proposed 4:1 ratio, an estimated 4370 lives saved and $720 million saved over 2 years.

Factors That Influence Nurse Staffing Levels in Acute Care Hospital Settings

Ana Maria Porcel-Galvez et al.

Summary: The study found that nurse staffing levels in acute care hospitals were associated with hospital characteristics rather than patient characteristics. This provides evidence for factors impacting nurse staffing levels in these settings, and future studies should focus on the influence of patient characteristics on optimal nurse staffing levels.
