In-situ synthesized age-hardenable high-entropy composites with superior wear resistance

Yu Yin et al.

Summary: This work introduces a new approach to in-situ synthesize high-entropy composite (HEC) with high age-hardening ability and superior wear resistance. The composite shows enhanced hardness and compressive yield strength after aging at 800 degrees C for 96 h, resulting in significantly improved wear resistance compared to high-chromium cast iron. The unique microstructure of the HEC, including in-situ formed carbides, eutectic structures, and precipitates, effectively strengthens the soft FCC matrix and prevents severe delamination and cracking.

An Investigation on the Microstructure, Interface, and Mechanical Properties of Spark Plasma Sintered Ni/Ni-Ni3Al/Ni Compound

Pourya Mardiha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interface, microstructure, and mechanical properties of layered Ni/Ni-Ni3Al/Ni composite fabricated by spark plasma sintering. Results showed a uniform interface between different layers without delamination, cracks, or flaws, with interfaces categorized into Ni-Ni, Ni3Al-Ni3Al, and Ni-Ni3Al. Intermetallic joints showed less diffusion and sintering, while metallic interfaces displayed more diffusion. Samples with a mixed Ni/Ni3Al mid-layer exhibited improved shear strength compared to pure Ni3Al mid-layer samples.

Corrosion behavior of TiZrHfBeCu(Ni) high-entropy bulk metallic glasses in 3.5 wt. % NaCl

Pan Gong et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of TiZrHfBeCu(Ni) high-entropy bulk metallic glasses (HE-BMGs) has been investigated. The HE-BMGs exhibited high corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution due to the accumulation of ZrO2 and TiO2 in the passive film. The addition of Ni increased the contents of ZrO2, TiO2, and HfO2, while decreasing the content of BeO, thereby improving the corrosion behavior of the HE-BMGs. Compared to Zr41.2Ti13.8Ni10Cu12.5Be22.5 BMG, the high-entropy effect of the HE-BMGs can significantly reduce atomic mobility, inhibit outward migration of Cu, decrease the kinetics of the dissolution reaction, and inhibit inward erosion by Cl-, leading to improved corrosion performance.

Effects of minor Nd and Er additions on the precipitation evolution and dynamic recrystallization behavior of Mg-6.0Zn-0.5Mn alloy

Bin-Jiang Lv et al.

Summary: A new wrought magnesium alloy based on Mg-6.0Zn-0.5Mn has been developed, exhibiting a superior combination of high tensile yield strength and good ductility. Addition of minor neodymium and erbium accelerates twinning, dynamic recrystallization, and dynamic precipitation processes, leading to improved mechanical properties. The alloy demonstrates enhanced yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation due to fine complete DRX grains, second phase particles, and a high density of precipitates resulting from the micro-alloying.

In-situ carbide-reinforced CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy matrix nanocomposites manufactured by selective laser melting: Carbon content effects on microstructure, mechanical properties, and deformation mechanism

Young-Kyun Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of carbon content on the microstructure evolution, tensile properties, and deformation mechanisms of high-entropy alloy matrix nanocomposites additively manufactured by selective laser melting. It was found that an increase in carbon content led to enhancements in strength, work hardening rate, and elongation, while also affecting the microstructural features such as nano-sized carbides and average grain sizes. Furthermore, the formation of dislocation networks and deformation twins were observed, contributing to the high back stresses and yield strengths of the samples.

Deformation strengthening mechanism of in situ TiC/TC4 alloy nanocomposites produced by selective laser melting

Pengcheng Huo et al.

Summary: In this study, TiC/TC4 alloy nanocomposites were successfully fabricated using the selective laser melting (SLM) process, and the deformation strengthening mechanism of Ti matrix reinforced with TiC nanoparticles was investigated in depth. The results showed that nanoscale TiC reinforcement promoted the formation of deformation twinning, maintaining an orderly arrangement of atoms in the TiC/TC4 alloy nanocomposites during deformation. Additionally, a dual strengthening mechanism involving severe lattice distortion and deformation twinning was proposed to describe the occurrence of dislocation pinning effects.
