High-entropy alloys with heterogeneous microstructure: Processing and mechanical properties

Praveen Sathiyamoorthi et al.

Summary: Engineering metallic materials with excellent mechanical properties, especially strength and ductility, are highly sought after for various applications. Novel approaches to enhance strength-ductility synergy through heterogeneous microstructures have proven effective in overcoming the traditional strength-ductility trade-off. The discovery of high entropy alloys based on multi-principal elements offers wider possibilities for alloy design and the exploration of new alloys with remarkable properties.

The evolution of local stress during deformation twinning in a Mg-Gd-Y-Zn alloy

Yong Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of local stresses during deformation twinning using in-situ tensile testing and high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction. The results indicate that the local shear stress evolves dynamically during twinning, with negative shear stress observed during the propagation stage. The local Schmid factor and Luster Morris m' value times the LSF of the twin variant may reveal a threshold for the slip-induced twinning process.

A simultaneously improved strength and ductility on carbide free bainite steel via novel ausrolling and twinning process based on SFE controlling

Junkui Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a strategy to overcome the strength-ductility trade-off in high-strength carbide-free nanobainite steel. By designing two successive cycles of deformation within specific stacking fault energy ranges, the study successfully achieved a high density of dislocations and nanotwins in the steel, resulting in excellent strength and ductility. The proposed strategy has potential applications in the development of high-strength, high-ductility materials.

Internal friction in complex ferroelastic twin patterns

Xiaomei He et al.

Summary: This study presents the first attempt to investigate the internal friction of complex ferroelastic twin patterns using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Linear and non-linear internal friction regimes are observed at different stress amplitudes, separated by a pinning/depinning threshold. The motion of twin boundaries generates non-linear anelasticity, where the stress-dependent internal friction increases to a maximum and then decays. The internal friction is directly related to the motion of needle twins.

Parent-phase twinning induced ultra-high damping capacity of Mn-20Cu-5Ni-2Fe alloy under directional solidification process

Sibin Zhang et al.

Summary: The favorable microstructure of Mn-Cu based alloy can be achieved by adopting appropriate pulling rate during the process of directionally solidification, leading to enhanced mobility of twin and dislocation and approaching ultra-high damping performance. The microstructure characterized by regularly arranged dendrites and micron-scaled twins with low angle misorientation boundaries can substantially increase twin boundary IF up to 2 times higher than ordinary manufacturing process.

Enhancing strength-ductility synergy in an ex situ Zr-based metallic glass composite via nanocrystal formation within high-entropy alloy particles

Huaping Ding et al.

Summary: By adding equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) particles as the second phase, the strength and plasticity of Zr-based metallic glass composites were improved simultaneously. The enhanced strength-ductility synergy was attributed to high-density dislocations and nanocrystal formation in the HEA particles, as well as stable propagation of multiple shear bands.

Synergistic damping effect mechanism of magneto-mechanical hysteresis and dislocations energy dissipation in FeMnCrCo high entropy alloys

Wanxin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of configurational entropy on microstructure, magnetic properties, and damping behaviors of Fe65-xMn20Cr15Cox (x = 0, 5, 10, 15) high entropy alloys were investigated. Results showed that as Co content increased, magnetic performance decreased while internal friction Q-1 increased; with increasing configurational entropy, a dislocation damping mechanism was introduced in addition to the ferromagnetic damping mechanism.

Temperature dependent deformation behavior and stacking fault energy of Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 alloy

A. K. Chandan et al.

Summary: The variation of stacking fault energy (SFE) with temperature in Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 high entropy alloy was experimentally evaluated, showing a transition in deformation behavior from limited twin formation and slip dominance at room temperature to mixed-mode consisting of FCC -> HCP transformation and twinning at -100 degrees C. The simultaneous occurrence of twins and deformation-induced martensitic transformation at -100 degrees C led to superior strength-ductility combination in the specimen. The increase in SFE at room temperature, despite the removal of Ni, can be understood by considering the effect of alloy chemistry re-adjustment on Delta G(gamma ->epsilon).
