Biaxial strained dual-phase palladium-copper bimetal boosts formic acid electrooxidation

Jiarun Geng et al.

Summary: Surface strain engineering is an effective strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic properties of noble metal nanocrystals. A dual-phase palladium-copper (DP-PdCu) bimetallic electrocatalyst with remarkable biaxial strain was constructed via a wet-chemical approach, showing superior activity towards formic acid oxidation. Density functional theory calculations revealed the downshift of d-band center of Pd atoms due to interfacial strain, weakening the adsorption strength of undesired intermediates.

Multiphysics Modeling of Thermal Behavior of Commercial Pure Titanium Powder During Selective Laser Melting

Wenlin Ye et al.

Summary: A mesoscopic simulation was conducted to study the heat behavior of CP-Ti during selective laser melting, showing significant improvements in maximum temperature, temperature change rate, lifetime of molten pool, and size with the increase of laser power. Moreover, characteristics and heat behavior of the molten pool under double track were mainly investigated, finding higher maximum temperature, lifetime, and dimensions in the second track compared to the first, with a larger length-width ratio as laser power increases.

Summary: This work compares the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear performance of two Ti-Mo biomaterials prepared by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) with different synthesis mechanisms. The in-situ Ti-7.5Mo-2.4TiC composites show improved mechanical strength and wear resistance compared to Ti-7.5Mo alloys, despite having a higher elastic modulus.

Summary: This study revealed that in common procedures, most participants perceived printed titanium implants to be superior to traditional techniques in terms of surgical duration, accuracy, dental restorability, and aesthetics, although there was less agreement on complications and plate-failure risks. Perceived turnaround times and costs varied, with the greatest consensus on two-segment fibular-flap reconstructions and orbital floor repair.

Summary: The combination of long and short titanium plates showed superior biomechanical properties for mandible reconstruction compared to a conventional single long plate. It provided higher safety, lower fixation instability, and good bone segment stability during masticatory activities. This preclinical evidence supports the feasibility of using short plates for complete mandible reconstruction and may have implications for treating other large-sized bone defects with customised implants using additive manufacturing technology.

Study of superior strength in Ti15Mo alloy manufactured using selective laser melting

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: A biomedical Ti15Mo alloy with a relative density of 99.9% was successfully fabricated using selective laser melting. The presence of nanometer-sized isothermal omega precipitates significantly enhanced the yield strength of the alloy, leading to superior strength compared to solution-treated Ti15Mo. Defects in the alloy had a significant influence on elongation but a negligible influence on yield strength.

Summary: A multidimensional and comprehensive analysis of the in-vivo fatigue failure mechanism of an SLM-fabricated Ti6Al4V mandible reconstruction plate reveals that surface defects and maximal stress caused by implant design are the main factors for crack initiation and propagation, showing a combined brittle/ductile fracture mode. The process is influenced by Ca/P/O deposits and hydrogen embrittlement under the biological environment.

Achieving ultrahigh-strength in beta-type titanium alloy by controlling the melt pool mode in selective laser melting

X. Luo et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved ultrahigh strength and nearly full density in a TNZTS alloy by optimizing the SLM process parameters. The alloy exhibited an ultrahigh compressive yield strength of 1286 MPa, with microstructural analyses indicating that the strength resulted from high-density dislocations and effective dislocation blockage by the S1 and S2 phases. This strategy provides fundamental guidelines for generating refractory metallic alloys with high density and excellent performance.
