Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Tracking the sliding of grain boundaries at the atomic scale

Lihua Wang et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries (GBs) are crucial for the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline materials, yet the atomic-scale dynamic processes of GB deformation remain unclear. This study presents an in situ atomic-resolution investigation on how sliding-dominant deformation occurs at general tilt GBs in platinum bicrystals, involving direct atomic-scale sliding and sliding with atom transfer across the boundary plane.

Summary: The study evaluated the tensile creep behavior of GW83 alloy under different temperature and stress conditions, showing that increasing temperature and stress significantly affect the creep performance. T6 treatment can greatly improve the creep resistance of the alloy, and the tensile creep plastic deformation is mainly controlled by the applied stress.

Gradient nanotwinned CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy with strength-ductility synergy

Shuqing Yuan et al.

Summary: A high-strain rate ultra-precision machining technology named single point cubic boron nitride turning was developed to fabricate gradient nanotwinned CrCoNi medium entropy alloy layer. The refinement process from core to surface was governed by size-dependent twinning mechanisms, resulting in significantly enhanced yield strength and well-retained ductility. The machining process provided sufficient equivalent stress to activate twinning partials for forming the gradient nanotwinned structure.

Atomistic simulations of high-temperature creep in nanotwinned TiAl alloys

Yongpan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study conducted large-scale atomistic simulations to investigate the high-temperature creep mechanisms of nanocrystalline and nanotwinned TiAl alloys, revealing the influences of applied stress, grain size, and temperature on creep behaviors and mechanisms. Particularly, a critical twin thickness was identified for nanotwinned samples under high stress, leading to a transition in creep mechanism from dislocation nucleation and slip to detwinning.

Severe plastic deformation-produced gradient nanostructured copper with a strengthening-softening transition

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: This study achieved a gradient nanostructured layer containing a nanograined-nanotwinned sub-layer region and an extremely refined twin-free nanograined top surface layer on copper using an ultrahigh-strain rate single point diamond turning technique. The critical grain sizes for deformation multifold twinning and detwinning were discussed, and a Hall-Petch strengthening-softening transition was discovered at a critical grain size of 30 nm in the gradient nanostructured layer. Softening mechanisms were attributed to twin thickness effect and grain boundary-mediated plasticity in extremely fine twin-free nanograins.
