Thin Strip vs Direct Chill Casting: The Effects of Casting Cooling Rate on the As-cast Microstructure of AA6005 Al-Si-Mg Alloy

Shengze Yin et al.

Summary: This study compared the properties of aluminum AA6005 sheet produced by Thin Strip (TS) casting with slabs produced by Direct Chill casting in the as-cast state. The TS cast sheet showed finer grain size, smaller secondary dendritic arm spacing, improved solute supersaturation, and a lack of Mg2Si constituents at the grain boundary due to higher cooling rates. These findings provide a basis for further heat-treatment optimization of TS cast sheet.

Negative strain rate sensitivity of yield strength of Al-Si alloy additive-manufactured using laser powder bed fusion

Naoki Takata et al.

Summary: This article reports an unexpected finding regarding the mechanical behavior of Al-12%Si alloy manufactured using the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process. The as-manufactured specimen has a negative strain rate sensitivity of flow stress at an early stage of tensile deformation, while the post heat-treated specimens exhibited a positive strain-rate sensitivity.

Effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Er-containing Al-7Si-0.6 Mg alloy by laser powder bed fusion

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the Al-7Si-0.6 Mg alloy with added rare earth erbium (Er) was prepared by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology, and the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. The results showed that the addition of Er can hinder the epitaxial growth of the columnar crystal and modify the eutectic Si particles, resulting in an ultrafine eutectic network cellular structure with excellent mechanical properties.

Enhancing as-built microstructural integrity and tensile properties in laser powder bed fusion of AlSi10Mg alloy using a comprehensive parameter optimization procedure

Adib Salandari-Rabori et al.

Summary: The importance of a thorough and systematic approach to parameter optimization in the laser powder bed fusion of AlSi10Mg alloy is demonstrated. The proposed methodology involves utilizing prevalent energy density/enthalpy models and in-depth microstructural and mechanical characterization to achieve excellent tensile properties. The optimized VED value is strongly influenced by the physical attributes of the powder source, which highlights the need for further investigation into the effects of particle morphology and size distribution.

S. Saimoto et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the role of cross-slip activation on controlling dislocation mechanisms and deformation debris creation in a dispersion-strengthened matrix (DSM) face-centred cubic metal. The study identifies that with increasing temperature, percolation continues to occur by Orowan looping, while upon yielding, GNPL formation is replaced by various types of dipole loop creation. The study suggests that the activation energy to overcome the obstacle becomes identical to the measurable activation work in the temperature range where S is constant.

Correlation of dynamic compressive properties, adiabatic shear banding, and ballistic performance of high-strength 2139 and 7056 aluminum alloys

Selim Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, SHPB tests were conducted on 2139 and 7056 Al alloys to investigate their dynamic compressive properties and ASB formation behavior. The results showed that 7056 alloy had a higher susceptibility to ASB formation, lower critical strain for initiating ASBs, and lower resistance to ASB formation compared to 2139 alloy. This was consistent with the better ballistic performance of 2139 alloy observed in V-50 ballistic impact tests.

The Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect in an Al-Cu aluminum alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Zhiheng Hu et al.

Summary: An Al-Cu alloy fabricated by selective laser melting was chosen to study the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effects. The study revealed that heat treatment decreases dislocation density and the decrease in solute atom concentration and dislocation density are responsible for the attenuation of PLC effects. The strong anisotropy in PLC effects observed in the as-built samples is attributed to grain structure and texture.
