Solid solution induced back-stress in multi-principal element alloys: Experiment and modeling

Yongju Kim et al.

Summary: The kinematic and isotropic hardening behavior of high and medium entropy alloys with a single-phase FCC structure was investigated. It was found that the cross-slip in FCC structures is influenced by fluctuations in the distribution of different atom species. The study used a solidsolution induced back-stress model to investigate the effects of dislocation forest stress and back-stress in a non-equiatomic medium entropy alloy.

Comparative Study Between Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel During Dissimilar Friction Stir Welding with Aluminum: Kinetics of Al-Fe Intermetallic Growth

R. Beygi et al.

Summary: The study found that different alloying elements in steel have different effects on the formation of IMCs. The IMC layer in SS/Al joints is thinner than that in CS/Al joints, partly due to the alloying elements in stainless steel such as Ni and Cr hindering the growth rate of IMCs. At high rotation speed, liquation occurred in SS/Al joints, reducing the nucleation rate of IMCs.

A new strategy for fabrication of unique heterostructured titanium laminates and visually tracking their synchronous evolution of strain partitions versus microstructure

Hao Ding et al.

Summary: This study reports a new strategy for preparing heterostructured pure titanium laminates with a good combination of strength and ductility. The deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of the laminates were visualized using advanced microscopy techniques. The hetero-deformation induced stress strengthening and hardening were found to be the key factors contributing to the superior properties of the heterostructured material.

Determination of damage model parameters using nano- and bulk-scale digital image correlation and the finite element method

Gang Hee Gu et al.

Summary: In this study, the fracture behaviors of a dual phase steel were investigated at the nano-to bulk-scale using a combination of micro-digital-image-correlation (micro-DIC) technique and finite element method (FEM). The emergence of surface cracks and strain distributions during plastic deformations were observed using micro-DIC and macro-DIC techniques. FEM simulations were conducted to calculate the stress state of damaged regions. The obtained data was then used to determine model parameters for predicting material damage behavior. The accuracy of the damage model parameters was confirmed through comparison with experimental results.

Constitutive Modeling with Critical Twinning Stress in CoCrFeMnNi High Entropy Alloy at Cryogenic Temperature and Room Temperature

Yongju Kim et al.

Summary: The constitutive modeling of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy at cryogenic and room temperatures has been investigated, showing enhanced ductility and strength at 77K due to the combination of sub-grain structure, twinning, and dislocations. A kinematic constitutive model with a critical twinning stress parameter was constructed to explain the twinning initiation criteria, showing good agreement with experimental data. Different modeling parameters were obtained for each temperature to account for the changing deformation behavior.

Obtaining a Wide-Strain-Range True Stress-Strain Curve Using the Measurement-In-Neck-Section Method

G. H. Gu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method for measuring true stress-strain curves over a large-strain-range during tensile testing using DIC, which was successfully applied to dual-phase and low carbon steels. The experimental results show the effectiveness of this method in accurately measuring long-range true stress-strain curves.

Interface-position-dependent structure evolution and mechanical behavior of corrugated cold rolled Cu/Al clad plate: experiment and simulation

Xiangyu Gao et al.

Summary: The novel corrugated cold roll bonding (CCRB) process was used to prepare Cu/Al corrugated clad plates, which showed reduced warpage amplitude and improved plastic deformation due to the presence of multiple cross shear zones. The microstructure at different positions varied significantly, with position III (trough) achieving the highest ultimate tensile strength. The strength of the Cu/Al corrugated clad plate is influenced by dislocation strengthening and grain boundary strengthening mechanisms, with different effects in the Cu and Al matrices.
