Effect of alloying oxygen on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Zr-based bulk metallic glass

W. H. Zhou et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses with varying oxygen content. Results showed that with increasing oxygen content, compressive plasticity decreased slightly before plunging drastically, revealing a threshold oxygen content level for ductile-brittle transition at 3500 at. ppm. The embrittlement at high oxygen content was closely related to changes in microstructure.

On the relationship between the accumulation and release of elastic energy during the flow serrations of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass

S. H. Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the accumulation and release of elastic energy during flow serrations of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) under varying mixed-mode loading conditions. Findings showed significant variations in both the elastic energy accumulation rates and load drops, with the latter being more scattered. Smaller elastic energy accumulation rates can result in smaller load drops by forming more shear-band intersections, impacting the plastic deformation mechanisms of BMGs.
