Microstructure and mechanical properties of (Nb,W,Ti)(C,N)-Ni solid solution cermets with 6 to 20 wt% Ni

S. G. Huang et al.

Summary: The microstructure, phase constitution, and mechanical properties of Ni bonded (Nb,W,Ti)(C,N) solution cermets were studied, with simulations of phase composition in the sintered cermets. The sintered cermets exhibited a microstructure of Ni alloy binder dispersed in (Nb,W, Ti)(C,N) solid solution grains with core-rim structure.

Synthesis, microstructure, and mechanical properties of novel high entropy carbonitrides

Yichen Wang et al.

Summary: A series of novel high entropy ceramics were synthesized using spark plasma sintering, and the effect of the nitrogen-to-carbon ratio on their microstructure, phase compositions, bonding characteristics, and mechanical properties was investigated. The results showed that the lattice parameter and theoretical density of the ceramics increased with increasing nitrogen ratio, while the grain size remained unchanged. The hardness and modulus of the ceramics decreased with increasing nitrogen ratio, but were still higher than the rule of mixture values.

Liquid phase assisted synthesis of (Ti,V,Nb,Ta,W)C-Ni high entropy carbide cermets by conventional pressureless sintering

Zahid Anwer et al.

Summary: Two-phase fully dense high entropy carbide cermets were successfully prepared using conventional processing route. A homogeneous high entropy carbide phase was obtained through liquid phase sintering at 1420 degrees C. Thermodynamic simulations, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, electron probe microanalysis, and nanoindentation were performed to study the phase evolution and mechanical properties of the material.

Production and Properties of High Entropy Carbide Based Hardmetals

Johannes Poetschke et al.

Summary: Dense, high-entropy carbide cobalt-bonded hardmetals with two different compositions were successfully manufactured by gas pressure sintering. The presence of some undissolved TaC and HfO2 in one of the compositions led to a reduced hardness to fracture toughness ratio. Measurements of magnetic saturation polarization showed marginal dissolution of the carbide-forming metal elements in the binder phase.

Microstructure and characterization of (Ti,V,Nb,Ta)(C,N) high-entropy ceramic

Summary: The high-entropy ceramics were successfully produced by spark plasma sintering with varying N contents to investigate the impact of N element on microstructure and properties. The introduction of slight nitrides refined the grain size and enhanced hardness. The wear resistance and thermal conductivity initially increased with greater nitride content before decreasing.
