Novel Fe-0.3Cr-0.4Mo-1.5Mn-3Ni-0.6C tool steel with superior properties under quasi-static and dynamic loading

Fabian Kochta et al.

Summary: This study presents the correlation between microstructure and mechanical behavior of a novel designed high strength tool steel under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions, attributing the behavior mainly to deformation-induced martensite formation. Tests under dynamic loading conditions show increased compressive yield strength and work hardening, without significant changes in compressive strength and total deformation. The newly developed cast tool steel exhibits no significant strain rate sensitivity, a notable property for cast tool steels.

Positive Strain Rate Sensitivity and Deformation Behavior of a Fe-29Mn-3Al-3Si TWIP Steel

Shucheng Shen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Fe-29Mn-3Al-3Si twin-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel exhibits significant strain rate sensitivity under different deformation rates, with dynamic impact deformation showing higher yield strength than quasi-static compression. Microstructural analysis shows the presence of secondary and multi-fold deformation twins in dynamic impact samples.

Processing routes, resulting microstructures, and strain rate dependent deformation behaviour of advanced high strength steels for automotive applications

Tarun Nanda et al.

Summary: The automotive industry is striving to achieve lightweight body-in-white structures to meet strict regulations on emissions and crash testing. Advanced high strength steels are increasingly used in the automotive industry due to their improved crashworthiness and formability at reasonable costs. The multi-phase microstructures of AHSS provide superior strength-ductility combination compared to conventional high-strength steels.

Unusual relationship between impact toughness and grain size in a high-manganese steel

Pan Xie et al.

Summary: High-manganese steels are important structural materials known for their excellent low-temperature toughness. A reversal relationship has been observed between impact toughness and grain size in these steels, where increasing grain size can drastically improve impact toughness, especially at low temperatures. This improvement is attributed to twinning induced plasticity and transformation induced plasticity effects in the coarse-grained steel.

Complex Structural Effects in Deformed High-Manganese Steel

Joanna Kowalska et al.

Summary: The study on Fe-21.2Mn-2.73Al-2.99Si steel deformed at ambient temperature reveals the formation of hexagonal ε-martensite and gradually increasing cubic α′-martensite within its microstructure as deformation progresses. Both mechanical twinning and strain-induced phase transformations were found to contribute to the increase in mechanical properties of the steel.
