Quantifying the influence of secondary phases on corrosion in multicomponent Mg alloys using X-ray computed microtomography

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: The corrosion of Mg multicomponent alloys is closely related to secondary phases. X-ray tomography (XCT) has been used to study the correlation between corrosion and secondary phases in traditional AZ91 alloy and newly developed Mg-10Gd-5Dy-0.2Zr alloy. The changes of corrosion morphology with time and the effects of different secondary phases on corrosion have been analyzed.

Effect of Zn addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast BCC Mg-11Li based alloys

Chuanqiang Li et al.

Summary: The addition of zinc has a significant impact on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast BCC Mg-11Li based alloys, affecting the type and volume fraction of precipitated phases. Solid-solution treatment can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, but also results in a significant reduction in elongation.

Origin of the age-hardening and age-softening response in Mg-Li-Zn based alloys

Hao Ji et al.

Summary: The origin of the age-hardening and age-softening response in Mg-10Li(-Zn)(-Er) alloys is studied. The age-hardening is attributed to the precipitation of the semi-coherent (Mg, Li)(3)Zn phase, while the age-softening is primarily caused by the gradual substitution of Mg atoms by Li/Zn atoms in the precipitate. The addition of Er retards the evolution of the (Mg, Li)(3)Zn precipitate, leading to a deceleration of age-softening in the alloy.

Mg-Fe LDH sealed PEO coating on magnesium for biodegradation control, antibacteria and osteogenesis

Dongdong Zhang et al.

Summary: The development of bio-safe and functional Mg-Fe LDH-modified PEO coatings for the protection of magnesium-based biomedical implants is a hot topic. In this study, Mg-Fe LDH films with different Fe contents were successfully fabricated on PEO coatings using a novel two-step method. The highly-oriented LDH nano-sheets improved the anti-corrosion performance, cell adhesion and proliferation, and photothermal conversion property of the coatings. The in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the excellent anti-corrosion property and histocompatibility of the PEO/Mg-Fe LDH coatings.

Effect of lithium content on the mechanical and corrosion behaviors of HCP binary Mg-Li alloys

Chuanqiang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the microstructure, crystallographic texture, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of as-extruded HCP Mg-xLi (x = 1, 3, 5; in wt%) alloys were investigated. The results showed that the Mg-5Li alloy with high lithium content exhibited a low degree of dynamic recrystallization and strong prismatic texture, leading to higher mechanical strength along the extrusion direction. Additionally, the high lithium content improved the corrosion resistance of the alloy and mitigated groove-like corrosion.

Synergistically improved damping, elastic modulus and mechanical properties of rolled Mg-8Li-4Y-2Er-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy with twins and long-period stacking ordered phase

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: The Mg-8Li-4Y-2Er-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy exhibits high damping capacity, tensile strength and elastic modulus after heat treatment and cold rolling processes. The introduction of LPSO phase and formation of twins during cold rolling contribute to the improvement in damping capacity and tensile strength. The high elastic modulus of the cold-rolled alloy can be attributed to the effects of LPSO phase and cold rolling.

Summary: The study found that in Mg-Li-Al alloys, diffusion of alloying elements resulted in different matrix zones, with oxidation behavior in single-phase zones mainly influenced by Li concentration variations. Thicker oxidation films observed in the duplex diffusion zone compared to single-phase zones were due to accelerated oxidation.
