Extrusion of Unhomogenized Castings of 7075 Aluminum via ShAPE

Tianhao Wang et al.

Summary: Extrusion of unhomogenized castings of the 7075 aluminum alloy has been achieved using shear assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE). ShAPE combines plastic deformation and heat generation to rapidly fracture and dissolve secondary phases, achieving homogenization and grain refinement. Compared to conventional extrusion, ShAPE eliminates the energy-intensive and time-consuming homogenization step and significantly improves extrusion speed and mechanical properties.

Application of hourglass control to Eulerian smoothed particle hydrodynamics

Shoya Mohseni-Mofidi et al.

Summary: Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is a promising method for handling large deformations in solid mechanics problems, but it faces instabilities such as tensile instability and zero-energy modes. This study aims to stabilize Eulerian SPH to accurately deal with large deformations and handle contact problems and fluid-structure interaction effectively. The proposed stabilization method proves to be easy to implement and shows good agreement with analytical solutions and finite element results in various simulation cases.

G. G. Stubblefield et al.

Summary: In this work, a fully coupled thermo-mechanical meshfree approach is developed for simulating the solid-state layer-by-layer additive manufacturing process AFS-D. The method uses a Lagrangian reference frame and solid mechanics formulation to resolve elastic and plastic strains. The simulation results are compared against experimental results for calibration, revealing temperature and strain rate gradients in the AFS-D process.

D. G. Andrade et al.

Summary: In this study, a coupled 3D thermo-mechanical numerical model was used to simulate the FSW process and analyze the evolution of contact conditions, strain rates, and temperatures. It was found that temperature and sticking fraction evolve in a similar way with processing parameters, while strain rate is mainly determined by tool rotation speed.

Summary: This study theoretically analyzes and numerically simulates the laser irradiation step and thermo-viscous flow during selective laser sintering process on polymeric materials using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method. It introduces the concept of attenuation melt ratio (AMR) and constructs normalized process diagrams to optimize mechanical properties of materials. The predictive quality of these process windows is confirmed through assessment of mechanical properties of laser-sintered parts made of different polymers.
